IIsi Rom slot

So I did a search and with all the mods going on I couldn't find an answer.

Why does a IIsi have a ROM slot if it doesn't need it? Unusual for them to add parts for no reason. My IIsi has a slot with no rom in it. It works fine.

I was just wondering.

Apple included ROM slots in most computers for a long time because they were leery of having another "Dirty ROM" fiasco on their hands. Connectix found a way to clean up the dirty ROMs in software and patented it, so Apple wound up paying them "an undisclosed amount" to buy and distribute MODE-32 as a freeware fix, barely avoiding a major class action suit.

With easily upgradeable ROM Slots and jumper or automatic cutouts for MoBo ROMs, they rested a bit easier. At the end of the Quadra era, the Slots remained in the spec/PCB Layout, but were usually left unimplemented. Later they were dropped entirely or used exclusively, depending upon the model.

i guess the same thing goes for the macbook pro. they were all shipping with DVD drives…. then they decided they didn't want them on there any more and started making them with out it.

all the IIsi's that i have seen, all have the rom slot… and i'm kinda glad too!.

I have only seen (2) IIsi's that did not have ROM' soldered onboard.

One that i have here. and one other customer's. and i'v capped a whole mess of those too!

I have see a few of those with a 50.000 mhz oscillator on there!

IIx / IIfx / IIcx / IIci / IIsi/ SE/30 / Q700 -- all have rom slots.

and thank goodness for Dougg3's rom simm :)

as bbran said, the Mac II even has a spot for a Rom Simm… maybe someone could experiment with that :) maybe i will ?

I am going to solder on a rom simm slot to my q800, load it up with 512megs of ram, pop in a 2mb simm with -ramcheck.

a good idea form bbran. -- i already got it running at 40mhz.

And the IIsi ROM does exist -- I've got one. I acquired it for next to nothing with a set of SIMMs. Gamba lists the part number.

a while ago i bought a 5 IIsi's lot on ebay, One of them had no video, no bong...

So after closer examination, there was no ROMS soldered on the mainboard.

I ended up looking inside the other machines and its ROM simm was inserted into another machine, with roms already onboard.

so poped that out, and poped it in the one with no roms, and it booted up.

The IIsi rom simm definitely looks different then the SE/30 rom simm.

I think the SE/30 has a rom simm slot, purely because they could not find another square inch of space to solder roms on the PCB :)

the SE/30 is a cramed PCB.
