IIgs Rom00 question

Hello everyone,

  I've got a IIgs with Rom00.  My question is I see a lot of the upgraded IIgs' with Rom 01/03 but not too many Rom00's.  Are they worth more?

As “investment” collectors’ items, IIgses are worth about $20, regardless of ROM revision. You can get five times that if you have a nice specimen and a buyer who actually wants to use it as a working machine. ROM 00 units appear never to count as “nice specimens” to an actual user on account of the bugs that were fixed in later ROM revisions.

Take this with a pinch of salt, as I am about as far from a dealer in IIgses as you can get while still owning more than one, but these are my observations based on very limited personal experience.

  Thanks for the response!! Ouch, I paid 80$ for this iigs with the monitor, x2 external 800kb floppy drives and a 5.25" floppy drive.  I am about to pick another up with rom01.  Is rom03 the most desirable? I would assume it is the newest with all revisions so probably best to have?

ROM03 = 1MB onboard RAM, less RF noise, slightly faster, supposedly doesn't work with all games due to bug fixes (but take with a grain of salt, reports vary)

All IIGSes fetch more than $20!

Yeah, $80 for what you got sounds like a nice deal. I've never seen a IIGS for $20, or I'd own one!

I can see this being true. I've seen other machines where devs built software to take advantage of faulty code, only for it to break later on because the bug was fixed.

Either way it's going to be rare in this day and age to come across an application on the IIGS which will be unable to work because of one of these bugs.

A ROM00 is not much more than a fast IIe with a few built-in parts.  A ROM01 gives you a bunch of more software capabilities.  A ROM03 gives you a quieter speaker (especially when running GSOS, which a ROM00 can not do).

lol i wonder if Dougg3's new Simm Adpator for use with his programmer, could be used to play with different ROM's in the IIgs,   Including many of the Mac's as well.

Personally I feel like I got a great deal, and in the end, thats all that matters!  I just picked up another IIgs today with a BUTTLOAD of extra stuff for free.. couple printers a monitor, software/manuals from the same guy, so we'll see what I got tomorrow when I pick through it.

Later ROM revisions are usually associated with bug fixes and some minor hardware revisions, it'd be nice to have an extensive list of what has been fixed but I wonder if that information has ever been made public by Apple. 
If you're interested in getting more details, here you can find a rather exhaustive list of what's been changed from earlier to newer revisions; I don't know if that information is complete or "Apple certified" in any way, but it seems like a good place to start from anyway!

ROM 00 machines are fairly useless for actually running Apple IIgs software. GS/OS requires a ROM 01 for example.

Yeah, I haven't had too much time at the shop to play around with the IIgs yet.  I've now got a rom00 and rom01 IIgs, but no way to hook up an external/internal HDD yet.  Still trying to read and understand what exactly I need.  Looks like I need a scsi controller which seems rare.   Then i'll install gs/os and play around some more, gametime!
