How to take a screenshot on a 7.0.1 MacClassic?--SOLVED

I would like to take screenshots of my Macintosh Classic with system 7.0.1 and then open the images in a PC to, for instance, use them in a blog.

I know there was a keyboard combination that I don't remember now, but the image file created had no extension (simply was «Screen01» with no .gif, .jpg, .bmp, .tif.....nothing) and I found no way to open it in a Linux or Window$ box...by means of GiMP, Photoshop....they didn't love the file. :-/

How is this accomplished?

By now the only screenshots I take are like this....

⌘shift3Edit the filename to rename, including a .pict at the end and see if that works.

I had already tested that, adding .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .psd, .tif, .pdf and .png to the file name. No way.

It doesn't seem to work.

Which graphics program should I use?

I use linux GiMP, but may test other options as well....

 
System 7.x screenshots are created in PICT format (data file type) Mac files(computer system file format). Adding a suffix does nothing for file type conversion. It is still a PICT file in mac file format, and adding any non-pict suffix is useless. If you can get the file over to the PC universe properly a suffix added there may give a hint to a suitably capable graphics program to try reading it using PICT format. But the suffix does no such conversion by itself. MacLinkPlus I think will do the computer system file format bridging between Mac and PC world, PICT to PICT and JPG to JPG but not data file type conversion, and PC exchange should allow you to write PC format floppies if I recall correctly. Probably easier to do PICT to JPG conversion on the Mac side before transfer, programs like Photoshop and Image Alchemy come to mind, unless you know your Unix world graphics program accepts PICT. If PICT is one of the input options, then it is just a matter of getting the PICT into proper form for the PC/Unix world and onto compatible media. How are you transferring the files you are trying?

Edited post: I stand corrected by the manual, MacLinkPlus 7.5 will convert from Mac (PICT) to PC (TIFF, or Windows Bitmap.BMP, also PC Paintbrush.PCX, Windows Metafile.WMF, Wordperfect Graphic.WPG). I do not have data on other versions of MacLink.

--Let's investigate if Window$$ Photoshop can do it...Photoshop for Macintosh will not run on a Macintosh Classic.

--Floppy drives...there is no other way in a Macintosh Classic with no Iomega Zip and no net connection. In Debian GNU Linux the file traffic Mac>Pc and viceversa is wonderfully flawless... :) :)

---As far as I know, MacLink Plus could probably run on System 7.5...

....don't know if there would be a chance to run it on a Classic...

Uncertain, but my MacLinkPlus 7.5 manual has instructions for System 6 users as well as for System 7 users, a very good sign! [:)] ]'>

Incorrect. Photoshop 1.0 will run on a Plus, and thus a Mac Classic. Where to get 1.0? Good question. Right here.

---Perfect. It is **quite more comfortable** to convert to .jpg within the Classic itself instead of a) saving the screenshot on to a floppy in the mac, B) opening linux to transfer the floppy file to the computer and c) opening windows to convert the file.

This seems to be a horrible roundabout.

Will try the Photoshop 1.0. option, to see if it works and keep posting.

I don't have a 7.0.1 handy right now to play with, but tell you what I did on 6.0.8. I did a screen shot and then opened up Word 4.0. I inserted the screenshot into a Word document and saved it. Perhaps if you can get Word documents across the great divide you can cut and paste and convert from there...(edited post: nevermind, this would have been a real roundabout path!)

Also, check out the popular shareware GraphicConverter program, version 3.3.1 requires System 7 and 3 MB memory.

 
I just downloaded and successfully expanded (I cheated, 10.3.9) from that same link. So the archive itself is ok, see if you can get more modern versions of Stuffit.

---Hmmm....Photoshop 1.0. is supposed to run in a Classic and earlier models, even a Plus. Perhaps what I need is not a newer version from Stuffit, but an older one...maybe Stuffit 1.5.1....am I right?

What's all the fuss? I can take a screenshot on a Mac Plus or SE and save the file to Zip disk. I can then sneakernet the Zip disk over to my Mac Pro and open the image in Leopard using Preview. I then "Save as" a jpg.

 
I believe Mac OS X's preview can support the pict format.

It does. I've converted some PICT files that way as well. I don't recall if GIMP will open them though. I'll have to double check.

 
If you haven't already, get GraphicConverter for your Mac (you can find old versions online and on FTP servers).
