How to build up to OS 8 something

Currently I am working with OS 9 and OS 7.6.1 on the same hard drive of my Performa 6360.

However some of my midi/audio programmes do not get along with either of those two OS because some of those programmes were built after OS 7 but before OS 9.

I would now like to try 8 something because I recall that's were i was with those programmes before I somewhat foolishly updated to OS 9 because for me there was no benefit.

I do have the OS 8 installer CD. And I have some updaters that were issued on MacAddict CD"s.

What updaters do I require to work up from 8 to 8 something ( i seem to remember having 8.6 but can not recall what i did to build it up ) ?

Or, if someone could share a copy of their OS 8.6 that would be great.

From 8.0 to 8.1 is a free upgrade from Apple's Older Software Downloads page. Same from 8.5 to 8.6. Those are really the only relevant point releases of MacOS 8.

But to go from 8.0/8.1 to 8.5, you have to find a disk of 8.5. It's not a free or downloadable upgrade.

Both 8.1 and 8.6 are nice and stable. The others ... yeah, not so much. 8.1 is a bit easier on memory requirements too, but 8.6 is more OS 9-like.

And we don't discuss "sharing" copyrighted material here.

Opps! I keep forgetting about that.

Thanks. It's amazing to me that you guys at these formums know all that stuff.

I can recall now that i did catch on that as i moved up the OS chain my poor old mac of the day gradually slowed down as each OS required more and more RAM and in those days AppleRAM was not cheap. However i did squeeze out that 8 MB of memory that Mac had by using different startup sets using ConflictCatcher because VirtualMemory did not get along with midi/audio programmes. Well that's my short trip down memory lane today.

OK, I got my performa6360 updated to 8.1.

So now it has OS 8.1 and 9.1 on the same hard drive which upsets Norton when I run it to optimize/degrag etc.

I need both systems because some of my midi/audio work in 8 but not in 9 and vice versa. For example Finale works in 9 and Opcode's Studio's do not work in 9. It's a little pain in the studio to restart into the correct OS to run the programmes.

However I am OK with that because at least now it's working.

The next problem to solve on this old beast is to get the PCI USB card to show up/work. ( that's at another posting here )
