How can I install System 6 on my SCSI hard disk?

A few weeks ago I got a nice external Apple 2GB SCSI hard disk from a friend. I tried using it with my Classic (running system 6.0. 8) and no matter what device ID # I used (tried 0-7) the drive being on and connected prevented the Classic from booting because it made a sick mac screen and a bunch of X's and numbers . When hotplugging the drive once the Classic was on and running, the Classic never recognized it.

I just found a Macintosh Plus (painted orange as a Mac 'o Lantern) that turns on asking for OS, but doesn't like my 800k boot disk (taped 1.4mb disk, my SE which runs Sys 7 on its own won't boot from it either) so while lacking a legitimate 800k disk, I wanted to try and boot the Plus from the SCSI. Any ideas how to do this? I also have an SE/30 (7.5) and a Color Classic (7.1) if either of those would be easier to work with. The other port on the SCSI has a terminator on it, I may mention.

Connect the drive to the SE/30 as a different id to the internal disk. Format the disk using HD Setup. Boot from the 6.0.8 disks, install "for all macintoshes" on to the new disk. Disconnect, attach to mac plus.

Well I'm assuming the internal HD is on '0' because that's where Get Info says it is. Doesn't the machine try and boot from the highest number SCSI device? That way aren't I bound to have a conflict?

You change the IDs so they don't conflict, ie, change the ID of the external disk. I was suggesting booting 6.0.8 from a floppy, so it's doesn't matter about SCSI boot order, anyway they rely on the setting from "Startup disk".

Okay - I plugged in the external SCSI, set it to #1, turned it on, put in my System 6 disk and it booted from disk and sees my internal HD but never the external, even on multiple reboots and changing external device ID. What am I doing wrong?

What does "See" mean?

Have you tried "SCSI Probe?" if it appears there have you tried a patched version of HDSC Setup? http://www.euronet.nl/users/ernstoud/patch.html

Try LaCie Silverlining if patched HDSC Setup doesn't work.

I had a drive that didn't work with patched HD setup. I think patched HD setup has a resource changed to "FF", the original being "00". If I changed it to "0F", the drive was recognize. Not sure if it really matters to point it out..

Wait....Am I an ignoramus? I assumed the SCSI drive would just show up like my internal HDs or floppies I stick in. It needs to be configured first?

Depends if it's formatted with an HFS partition or not. If it's been used as an A/UX data disk then it's not going to show up.

It may have been HFS+. I'll give the utility a try.

HFS+ volumes will mount on non-HFS+ systems. Inside will be a single TeachText file explaining that your system cannot use the format (OS 8.1 or better).
