Help with Internet, please

I'm quite a newbie when it comes to connecting a computer to the Internet, so I was wondering if I could get a bit of help with this.

I have an iMac G3 Indigo, 400 mHz, 10 GB hard drive, around 7-8 yrs old. I need to hook it up to the Internet. I already have an Ethernet cable, and it fits into the iMac, but obviously, not the wall.

Therefore, I have a few questions:

1) My PC (the one I'm on now) has an Internet DSL connection. If I were to simply plug the iMac with an Ethernet cable into an Ethernet port, would it immediately use my PC's connection, or do I need another device to do that?

2) Will an Ethernet cable work by itself to get me hooked up to the Web? I mean, is my PC's connection necessary for the Ethernet cable to work?

3) If it is an Ethernet cable that I need (which I'm sure it is), what kind of Ethernet port should I get? Any in particular that are recommended for iMac G3's?

Sorry if those questions seem weird and obvious, but I've never dealt with Internet connections like this before. And let me know if any additional info or clarification is needed.

Thanks,

if you want to use the internet on both the PC and iMac using the DSL modem i suggest buying a router so you can have both the PC and Mac using the same connection. all you do is plug the router using its wan port via ethernet up to the DSL modems ethernet port and connect each computer to the routers ethernet ports.

Let me re-word my question; looking it over, I realized that it made no sense:

As you know, I have an iMac G3. I keep it upstairs. Downstairs, I have a Windows PC. And (as I failed to mention before) it has a 2-wire router connected to it. But the iMac doesn't.

What is the most effective way for me to connect the iMac to the Internet, with what I have listed above?

If that isn't sufficient, what else do I need?

Thanks,

does that router have a unused ethernet port, if it does just buy a long ethernet cable and connect it to the iMac and run it to the router. or buy a wifi router, and a wifi card for the iMac.

To begin from the beginning, in a typical set-up of this sort:

1. Your have your DSL Modem

2. Your multi-port Router is connected to your DSL Modem. It is your Router that connects to the Internet, in a sense. It then distributes the connection to however many computers you connect to it (see 3)

3. Your computers are set up to get their networking info. from the Router, and when this is done properly, you can connect to the internet.

Now, this has already been done on one machine. Try the same settings in the relevant Control Panel (OS9) or in OSX System Preferences/ Network on the other machine and plug in the ethernet cable. Should work fine.

4. If you want to connect more machines to the internet, and you do not have enough sockets in your Router, buy an old hub or switch and use it to "expand" the Router's available ethernet connections.

5. This may help: http://www.atpm.com/network/

Thanks, Beachycove. I'll attempt to get what you have suggested.

Last night I took out this PC's 2-wire router and hooked it up to the iMac. I plugged in the Ethernet cable and phone line, but still the DSL status light flashed red. Therefore, as you said, I need a DSL modem. Actually, I'll also try and get another router so that I won't have to keep taking it from the PC.

Thanks for your help,

One modem is all you need, and then a router/ router-hub combination.

Get your software settings right before spending money for nothing! Everything depends on that.
