i looked and could not find instructions on just "how to install"
i was looking for a "double click" binary installer, or even just a drag and drop, but found nothing
it alluded to using brew to install, so i typed "brew install netatalk" but all i got back was [No available formula with the name "netatalk"]

so... how do i do it?

(also: why so difficult? ;)

Welcome to UNIX...

This is how you configure, compile and install it on a Mac. You need to install the dependencies (berkeley-db etc..) first using homebrew. The commands will likely not be 100% identical on your device, but you will get an idea how to do it.

MacPorts has a netatalk port that you can try out. It's a little old, and might not work well on Apple Silicon, but it should do the job.

If you have Docker Engine (Desktop) on you Mac you can pull and run an official Netatalk container.

Compiling from source is still the recommended way. It's not hard, if you have some familiarity with the terminal.

Note that regardless of the method of installation, you will have to prepare the file system and configure the server and shared volumes in Netatalk. So some level of system administration skills is required! There are plenty of guides around, including the official manual on https://netatalk.io/
