Getting ircle to work

You guys know about my little weekend project to put one of my macs on my desk for regular use. Well, it is all set up, the asante EN/SC-10T adapter is installed, as well as MacTCP 2.0.6, and ircle 1.5.6. I am not quite sure how to work it from there, and ircle keeps telling me my preferences are invalid.

I configured MacTCP, first for the built in ethernet option, and have it to automatic, with setting set C, because my subnet is 255.255.255.0. I can't really see it working though. I also tried the localtalk option, same thing.

Does anyone know how to work these old pieces of software? I think I forgot.

BTW, this is being ran on a 8mhz Classic I, 4mb of RAm, 40mb HD, 2 superdrives, and system 6.0.8 without multifinder.

Do you have another internet apps you can try? Like NCSA Telnet?

Re MacTCP, how are you obtaining an IP Address? Class C sounds right for your situation, and you shouldn't have to change anything else in the "IP Address" part of the config screen.

Do you know the values for your gateway and DNS?

What's your level of knowledge regarding general internet setups?

When I setup MacTCP at first I almost always set the IP address manually and don't bother with the DNS info. Then I open telnet and telnet to a known IP address to see if my network stuff is working at all.

I was trying to get MacWeb to work, but upon lanuching 1.1.1E, I get a message saying it requires system 7. I know Wannabe won't work, it needs system 7.5. I dunno about any other web browsers.

I know very little about MacTCP. Usually I use DCHP with TCP/IP, but I guess that won't work in this case. I know very little beyond that about manual internet setups.

If worst comes to worst, I can just pop 7.0.1 or 7.1 on here, if anyone can give me a recommendation on what would work best; which will make it a mite easier I think. But 6.0.8 boots from a cold start in 34 seconds, which trumps the 5 minutes it took for 7.5.5 to boot.

MacTCP doesn't support DHCP. If you are using the defaults, then that's why you're not getting connected. Many people get fooled by MacTCP's option for "dynamic addressing," but it is manifestly not DHCP.

Btw, wannabe generally works fine under 7.1 if you install the drag and thread manager extensions. I say "generally" only because the author doesn't guarantee it. However, I've not run into an exception.

alright, I installed 7.0.1, and system tune up. I looked at my modem's config page, the subnet is actually 255.255.255.255, and MacTCP only goes as high as 255.255.255.252. We may have a problem here. Is there some other software that allows me to get connected? when i launched ircle under 7.0.1, I got the MacTCP is not installed correctly error, but I did see the traffic LED blink a few times on the adapter, something that has not happened before, so it is talking to the computer, a good thing.

It's impossible to have a full 36-bit subnet mask, so that must be some kind of mistake.

Typically you would connect your EN/SC box to a switch or router. If you were to go to your router's config page, and the IP you used to get there was "192.168.1.1" then that would be your gateway. For the machine's IP address you could use anything between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254, as long as there are no duplications anywhere else on the network. (this is presuming you're using a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask, most consumer rotuers do by default.) For a DNS I would just use 4.2.2.1, or you can use whatever your ISP recommends.
