Getting a Q700 on the internet...

I'm trying to connect my Q700 to the internet.

I have power line adapters I am using. I believe the first adapter by my router is connected with a straight through cable. This has always worked for me, so this cannot be my issue. The receiving adapter is connected to my hub using a straight through. Again, I have been using this with no issues. Then the hub is connected to my Asante friendly net adapter, using straight through. Then that connects to the Q700 through that AAUI Ethernet port. I have also tried connecting it to a nubus Ethernet.

Nothing is working. The lights blink on the hub but the web browsers never work.

Any ideas?

I don't think I have anything to use for pinging. I've heard there's Mac tcp ping. Is that a separate program or is it built into Mac tcp?

There's a link to MacTCP Ping at the bottom of this page.  You REALLY need a copy to help figure out network troubles. Might be some other useful stuff there too.

Ok. Ill fire up my se/30 or plus or whatever and transfer the disk from my floppy emu to the Q700 later.

What about OT for this? What is better?

Ok, just put Mac TCP Ping on it. It says it cannot open Mac TCP driver, then quits...

If it helps, since I was not able to find a Mac TCP installer, I just dragged the control panel from my SE/30 onto a disk and then dragged it into my 700s control panel folder.

Nevermind, just had to restart.

Never mind again. I had OT enabled when it was working. I switched back to Mac TCP and its saying it cannot find the driver again...

I deleted the DNR file which I have been reading about. Guess Ill restart again and see if it makes a difference...

Ok so I enabled OT and am using TCP Ping.

I have entered 139.130.4.5 as the host address (A free dns tester, I have also been using 8.8.8.8 which is googles.). I am "sending" the ascii data of "Macintosh Quadra 700". So far, just Source x.x.x.x -> destination x.x.x.x comes up. Then its stuck loading. The input on my hub (The cable connected to my quadra, NOT my power line) is blinking green.

Is this how you do this?

My results of the test when I stop are Packets out/in/bad/%loss = 0/0/0/0 I CANNOT ping my local gateway either, as it gives the same result. That means something with the power line adapters, correct? Could I be using a straight instead of crossover? I don't think that would affect anything...

Update

I got the ping working! Everything is successfully pinging to googles servers and back.

However, wannabe and Mac web still don't do anything and instantly get errors about no connection.

I have deleted the prefs files too. Nothing.

It seems like they are not finding the connection. Is there a way to get them to detect it? Again, using Ot so it's built in...

Guess I'll try reinstalling wannabe or macweb later and see what happens. I think I installed them before I had anything set up.

What is your MacOS? Did you set a static IP?

It's 7.6.1.

I just gave it a random IP. Well I took my SE/30s IP, which was I think 192.168.1.94 and made it 192.168.1.70.

I don't remember changing anything else for my SE/30 but that first static IP.

I am using 7.6.1 on my Quadra too, and had no problem once I set a static ip/subnet/router/dns, I used an IP outside of my DHCP range to make sure no conflicts happened.

So what, make it like 254 instead of 70 or something?

It should be as easy as using LanScan (Pro is worth it!) and seeing what IP is not used and just using that, if your range starts at 2 then just go with 201.

Or do what I did, and go into your router and change your DHCP scope to not give out a specific range of IP addresses either at the beginning, or end. Giving you a handful of statics for use elsewhere.

Just got that LAN app. Theres only 3 devices currently, all with numbers under .10...

Ill fire up the Quadra now and see if anything changed.

Finally managed to get it online!

Don't know what it was... Just unchecked and rechecked a few things in the TCP/IP panel, blah blah blah, put it to manual again and changed my static to .99 and its suddenly working!

Nice. The old systems are finicky with tcp/ip settings. As Techknight suggested, you should figure out your range and change the scope. LanScan is real usefel, I use the pro version and create custom labels.
