Getting a Jaz drive to work

I've got a 2GB Jaz drive and a bunch of 1GB cartriges.  I've been using this Powerbook 540c I've got it connected to for lots of things, and have installed the Iomega extension and have used a Zip drive without issue.  But the Jaz drive doesn't show up at all.

If I use Drive Setup to scan the SCSI bus it shows the SCSI id but says "unsupported device".

The Jaz drive is connected directly to an HDI connector through a cable.  It has the compact form of SCSI (the 68 pin one?) and I have a converter cable from that to DB 25 and the HDI connecter has DB 25 at the end.  Since I am seeing it in Drive Setup, I don't think the cable is the issue.

I've tried it with and without the termination switch set on the Jaz which doesn't seem to make a difference.

I've tried it with a cartridge in at boot time, and with a cartridge inserted after boot.  Nada.

Anyone have any ideas?

Do you know if it works on other machines?

Does the amber light turn off after you insert a cartridge?  I had one in storage for a while and it failed when I tried to use it, like it just died.  Amber light stayed on and it didn’t seem to do the usual head seek which was what it did before.

Send a couple of cartridges to someone who has a working drive to have them formatted? That will remove one important variable in troubleshooting the drive. Good bug hunting.

edit: Send your adapters along with the drive as well. Got pics of your SCIS2 connector adapter? Those would be the other variables I can think of offhand.

Iomega driver 4.2 or 4.3?

Zips often use the 4.2.

My JAZ did not work with the 4.2, but with the 4.3

I thionk the way to go is to modify Drive Setip with ResEdit but I don't know what the volume would be resgistered as.

Have you tried Lido, SilverLining, HDT Toolkit or even a later version of the Iomega Toolkit?

The Jaz 2GB came out reasonably late (1997?) so it my only be supported by the corresponding Iomega driver.

Okay, discovered my Umax tower has a 1GB Jaz drive in it.  The cartridges load fine.  That system is running IomegaWare 1.1.3. I'm going to try just copying the extension and control panel to the other Mac I was testing it with, and try the 2GB Jaz drive on this Umax system.
