Seems to me the solution is to run leads to an external pack that mounts behind the unit. That way, if it leaks/explodes, it doesn't do so all over the internals. Bonus would be to have a little sealed plastic case it all goes in, so that when it destructs, the carnage is still contained.
It'd be neat if someone built such a kit that had spring clips or a fake battery on one end, a few feet of wire, and a plastic case with a CR2032 holder on the other end, possibly with a magnet or adhesive patch to affix to the back of the unit.
