Just picked up a Thinkpad i 1400 and XP Home on the original disk with an unused key code. The Thinkpad has a bad hard drive. It has a 300mhz Pentium MMX and 64 mb of ram in it. Once I get it up a running I'll put Windows 98se on it.
Win98se is an excellent choice. Most modern apps will run under it, and it's reasonably stable. Limited USB support is/was its main weakness (tough to use those flash sticks), but thanks to "Maxim Decimus" we now have a nearly-universal driver. For download links, see http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/win98se-usb-mass-storage-drivers.php
I've yet to encounter a usb flash drive that does not work with this driver.
Just pulled the cpu and discovered it is a 266mhz. Forgot to mention I got a Logitech Wireless mini mouse with it that now works well with my G4 tower.
