Free iBook 366 Indigo in box + external HDs!

I got my first Freecycle reply ever a week ago. Person had an iBook and 3 120 GB FireWire external HDs that they said somebody gave them a while back but they ended up not having the time for.

I drove up today and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the iBook was an 366 MHz Indigo with 320 MB RAM and had the original box with all of the original disks, manual, AC adapter and the original 128 MB module inside! The box is a little worse for wear and the iBook itself is a little dirty but I am still ecstatic that I was able to score my first iBook for the right price.

Has the stock HD and is running a clean install of 9.1. No Airport so I'll be definitely looking for one soon.

The FireWire 120 GB HDs work great too - just icing on the cake.

Can't wait to start playing around!

I have the original box (and remnants of the internal packaging) for my Tangerine iBook (bought new in late '99-early 2000), so it's not like I need more things in boxes.

But it's still very neat

Free and in a box, you can't beat that! Fantastic catch! NIce that it's complete with the accesories box and that machine is very nice, even today.

I find it curious how many people have preserved the packaging for Macs, accessories and software for them. Is that common in collecting PC and their gear?

I keep all my packages for those I bought from Apple directly. Some still have the original brown outer box Apple used.

As for non-Apple gadgets, I keep as many as possible, usually until I throw away the device itself.

(My partner is a bit unhappy about this, I know.)

Thanks guys! If anybody has an extra Airport card for sale I would be interested. I'm excited that I have a functioning G3 laptop again!

I've kept all of my boxes more or less for the past 5 years. I have more (such as the boxes for my first LC) but unfortunately I don't have any of the internal packaging for those. I don't think it's entirely a Mac thing though, I do have a lot of my old boxes for PC stuff.

Airport cards have dropped in price dramatically in the past five or six years. You can get one for around $10 USD on eBay these days.

Why not upgrade it to a nice 1024x768 XGA display? Makes it far more usable for normal everyday use...

To use AirPort card (802.11b) on OS 9, you will need to enable WEP security. Also, WPA (not WPA 2) is only supported on OS X 10.4.

Since WEP is not very secure these days compared to WPA2 Personal, you might need to limit the access by enabling the MAC access control.

Why not upgrade it to a nice 1024x768 XGA display? Makes it far more usable for normal everyday use...

Only the 466MHz models can be upgraded due to the video RAM. At least 8MB is needed.

I only did the mod on a board with an 8MB GPU. Never tried it on the other clamshell I have.

ETA: Looks like the 366MHz indigo model has 8MB VRAM, so either way, the OP could upgrade.

Interesting, it looks like only ones left in the dust are the Blueberries and Tangerines. I was actually researching this earlier today, because I need a LCD panel for my Blueberry, and one of the 12" Dual USBs just bit the dust.

Hi,

Would a first generation 12 inch PowerBook G4 867 MHz display work? I have two of them, in decent condition...

...I just need to first get a screen-upgradable iBook clamshell or two (probably Indigo and/or Key Lime) so I can even begin to think about doing this, let alone wonder if they'll work :-/ .

An off topic thought: the ultimate hack, I think, would be if someone learned how to upgrade the GPU/VRAM in these iBooks (it'd be up there with dougg3's fine work). It probably would be extremely difficult (and expensive), but to know if it's even possible would be neat, since as of now, to my knowledge, it is considered inpossible.

If I remember correctly, the displays between the iBook G3 and PB G4s are completely different. I'll have to look again though.
