Free HDT v2.5 to v2.5.3 Updater

Good news: The FWB Hard Disk Toolkit updater that was available all the years at http://www.fwb.com/dc/hdt/hdt2.5_to_2.5.3.sea.hqx is available at archive.org.

Bad news: The file is damaged. Should be 3.2MB, but is just 774KB in size after download and is broken.

Any kind soul out there lucky enough to download it ten years ago?

Download the updater. (3.2 MB)

Notes on using the Hard Disk ToolKit™ 2.5.3 Retail Version Update

This updater will update only retail versions of Hard Disk ToolKit™ 2.5 and

2.5.2. These versions use one of the following serial number series:

1. GC2nnnnnnnn

2. GT2nnnnnnnn

3. GF2nnnnnnnn

4. GH2nnnnnnnn

5. GI2nnnnnnnn

6. GK2nnnnnnnn

7. GL2nnnnnnnn

8. GM2nnnnnnnn

If your copy of Hard Disk ToolKit™ 2.5 or 2.5.2 does not use one of these

serial numbers, it is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version (the

software was packaged with a hard drive or computer system). You must contact

your drive or system manufacturer to obtain an OEM updater.

Before Updating

* We recommend that you perform a clean install of Hard Disk ToolKit™ 2

before performing the update. This ensures that you have a good set of

applications and extensions to update.

Easy Update or Custom Update

* Most users should use Easy Update. If you installed Hard Disk ToolKit™ 2.5

or 2.5.2 using Easy Install, Easy Update will update the components that are

either in the same folder as "Hard Disk ToolKit™" or, in the case of

extensions, in the System Folder on the same volume where HDT is stored.

* You will need to use Custom Update for the FWB Tools™ and TurboBoot

extensions if your copy of these extensions are located in a System Folder other

than one located on thee volume as your copy of the HDT applications. A

custom updater is also available for the special FWB Crisis Tool™, which is

provided with the floppy version of HDT™.

Which files are updated?

* Hard Disk ToolKit™

* Device Data

* FWB Mounter™

* FWB SCSI Configure™

* FWB Tool Manager™

* FWB Event Monitor™

* Monitor Auto-Launcher

* FWB Tools™

* TurboBoot™

* FWB Crisis Tool™

* Device Data ATA

* Supported Devices

* Hard Disk ToolKit Help

* SCSI Configure Mode Select (contents)

* QuickHelp™ (including Using QuickHelp)

* SimpleText

Which files are NOT updated?

* BenchTest Data

* Any custom Mode Select files you saved in the "SCSI Configure Mode Select"

folder

New Features and Fixes in 2.5.3

* Compatibility with Mac™ OS 8.5:

Hard Disk ToolKit™ is compatible with Mac OS 8.5.

Known Issues in 2.5.3

* Quadra 630/PowerBook 190-Hard Disk ToolKit and Personal Edition do not support

the IDE/ATA drives in these machines.

* PowerBook SCSI Disk Mode-SCSI Disk Mode docking on PowerBooks is not supported.

* Changing Automount setting:

With HDT 2.5.x, once you set a volume to Automount, you cannot respecify that it

should not Automount. You can specify that a volume SHOULD NOT Automount when you

first create it; however, if you respecify that the volume SHOULD Automount, you

cannot change it back by unchecking the Automount setting. To work around this

problem once Automount is specified, delete the volume and recreate it with the

Automount attribute unchecked. Automount will be more configurable in subsequent

releases of Hard Disk ToolKit.

* Power Management-Power Management works on most machines, but because of many

problems with different drives and drive firmware, power management does not

operate reliably on all machines. If you own an Apple drive, firmware updates are

available on their ftp web site at

ftp://ftp.info.apple.com/Apple.Support.Area/Apple.Software.Updates/US/Macintosh/Utilities/Firmware_Utilities/.

Not in my collection. I found the CNET page for it but of course the download link points to the non-existent file.

Hey guys,

What is so important about this update? Is this file really needed? i think, I have it somewhere in my archives (downloaded back then). And, btw, you should be using 3.0 on 68k machines or 4.5.2 on anything PPC.

Cheers,

ojfd

It doesn't appear to be in Vault, unfortunately. And I got a hang at 1.0 MB too. More specifically, I've got 1,048,308 bytes of it.

Here's the tail end:

Ok, Dog Cow, give me the link to upload. FTP oh Hotline or whatever.

This is what I have from FWB from that era:

HDT™ 2.5 Installer

HDT™ 2.5->2.5.2 Updater

HDT™ 2.5.X->2.5.3 Updater

plus

“Unlock Volume” Application

Author: FWB, Inc.

Needs: System 7.5.2, HDT/HDT*PE/RTK v.1.7.5c or earlier

ATTENTION SYSTEM 7.5.2 OWNERS:

Versions 1.7.5c and earlier of Hard Disk ToolKit, RAID ToolKit and Hard Disk ToolKit Personal Edition currently have a known incompatibility with Apple's new Drive Setup software. This Drive Setup software is only available as part of System 7.5.2.

PROBLEM:

After working on your hard drive with with FWB’s HDT Primer, you find that the drive has become “locked” (write-protected). This prevents users from writing data to the disk. All data on the disk should remain safe and unaffected.

This problem ONLY occurs on drives originally configured with Apple’s Drive Setup utility (which comes with System 7.5.2).

SOLUTION:

Boot from a drive other than the locked drive, then unlock the drive using Drive Setup.

* HOWEVER, if virtual memory was on at the time of locking, neither Apple's Drive Setup software, nor FWB's software, can unlock the disk. This problem is due to changes in Apple's new driver, not supported by FWB's current version of software.

If you are not able to unlock the drive with Apple’s Drive Setup, run the enclosed application to unlock any volumes that have been inadvertently locked. Then install FWB's driver on the Apple Drive to eliminate the problem from occurring in the future.

If nobody else has a drop point available, you can put it on my Hotline server:

I sorted some of the uploads the other day into the proper directories of the downloads area but there is just way too much stuff there. I don't even know what most of it is.

First things first: Thanks a lot for uploading the updaters.

As for my interest in them - well, I have a (legal) copy of HDT2.5 which is heavily used for backup purposes (HDT Device Copy). From time to time it runs into some problems, so I want to be sure not to use the 2.5.0 version, but a bug fixed version instead. 2.5.3 was the latest increment before the 3.0 major release.

Regarding your 3.0 recommendation: HDT 3.0 requires System 7.5.3, and I'm one of these 7.1 guys.
