Floppies for IIgs?

Where can I get 800k floppies for the Apple IIgs? I've looked around and they seem scarce. Is it possible to format 720k PC floppies as 800k IIgs ones?

720K IBM floppies are physically identical to 800K ProDos/HFS floppies, you just have to reformat them :)

FWIW, you can often find large lots on eBay for very cheap. I got a lifetime supply for essentially the cost of shipping.

Yaaaaay!

I have a HUGE amount of 720k floppies, so that news is great for me.

How would I go about reformatting for the IIGS... without the System Tools disk?

The instructions for most of the System Tools disk images on the net say that the disk must already be formatted...

The circle has no beginning.

Do you have a working GS system disk? If you do you can format the disks with that. If not do you have a copy of ADTPro to use to transfer images between your PC/Mac and the GS? If you have the latest copy of ADTPro, 1.0.2, it has an option to format the disk for you. If you need it you can download it from here:

http://adtpro.sourceforge.net/

hope this helps.

Nope. No working System disk, and no ADTPro.

Is there a way to put the disk in, say, a Classic, format it for the GS, and use Disk Copy to make a system disk?

I think you can format them in a 68K Mac under system 7, I think when you put in an unformatted disk it gives you options for other formats besides the basic Mac one.

I believe you will need to install the PC Exchange extension for Mac OS to support ProDOS.

The best thing I've found for making IIgs disk from images Mac is DiskDup+ or DiskDupPro... I've found the formatting is much more reliable than Disk Copy. You can download the IIgs system disk images from Apple's Older Software Downloads page (right at the top) and write them to disk with either Disk Copy or DiskDup+.
