Etherdock Inquiry

I recently alomost bought a Powerlink presenter for its ethernet port until I found it wasn't compatible with my 2300c(I linked to the ebay auction in the trading post for those of you who can use it). I have been looking for an etherdock and this realization that not all docks are compatible with the 2300c has me worried.

Is an etherdock compatible with a 2300c(ppc), and what about OS reqs? If it isn't compatible, what would be a good way to get an ethernet port on a 2300c?

ISTR using the Asante Micro EN/SC with the 2300c/SCSI MicroDock combo and also with the MiniDock.

I was re-arranging some of my Hackin' Goodies just today and ran across my pair of dis-assembled EN/SCs. They're just about the right size to desolder the PB SCSI connector for jumpering to the 2300c's internal SCSI HDD Cable Connector.

An RJ-45 Socket is just about small enough to replace the Modem's RJ-11 Socket.

So, desoldering the EN-SC's RJ-45 Socket to jumper it to the hacked in RJ-45 Modem Socket Hack leaves just about the right size PCB remaining to fit into the 2300c's redundant (atrociously slow) Modem Card's Bay! [}] ]'>

Resulting in an Dockless, INTERNAL, 2300c 10BaseT Solution! [] ]'>

The Netdock has adb and and an ethernet and plugs into the pds. The EN/SN plugs into an HD 30 or 20?(<- That is, before soldering to the internal scsi bay), and it puts out what?(Sorry, having trouble with the garbled Japanese to english)

WAIT WAIT WHAT!!!!! INTERNAL SCSI I WAS TOLD IT(the 2300c) WAS INTERNAL IDE AND WAS GOING TO GET ONE OF THESE. No one in the other thread mentioned this conflict of adapters...

Edit- Although the frankenduo route is pretty awesome, I still need to know if a plain etherdock is 2300c compatible, and if so I need its os requirements.

EDIT 2- I just pulled my HD and it definitely looks like IDE to me :?:

The 2300c MoBo was an upgrade designed to replace the MoBo of EVERY Duo from the original 210 & 230 on up, so it was designed to utilize existing HDDs and screens of ALL Duo types. It was promised as an upgrade from the very introduction of the Duo "System."

Ergo, both Apple's poor implementation of SCSI and Apple's intentionally (?) lamed IDE implementations & connectors are present on the 2300c as well as support and connectors for B&W, Grayscale and Color LCDs.

Which makes the 2300c one of the most interesting and hackworthy of PowerBooks ever released!

IMHO, the first thing to do in the "care & feeding" of Duos (or any other Mac in your collection) is to go to the Peripherals: LINKS Project: Rev. 3.0 and collect the DevNotes, Service Manuals, User Manuals and System Spelunking Tools for your toys, starting from the link to ~gamba2 and working the many other links that have been contributed by members there since the early days of the 68kMLA.

Google! In the meantime, I'll check for a spare TorquemadaPad cable!

Most of my 2300c's have been upgraded with Spherically Correct Pointing Devices! )

Edit: 8-o check out the last hit on the Google Link posted above! It's deja vu all over again! :lol:

When I did pretty much that exact search, I forgot the quotes and got crap. (remembers to use quotes now) So, it appears that the etherdock will work with a 2300c for internet, but not file transfers and that a newertech etherdock is far more stable for both. For the emeachines etherdock, it seems 8.1 is latest tested and moderately stable os it supports and 8.1 is not supported by classila. I guess I am NOW looking for a newertech etherdock.

I went to boot up the powerbook after fixing the trackpad cable, and it has died. No startup chime, no HD spin up, no nothing. Funny thing is, dock plus recognizes it and boots itself up, even from the powerbook's power button, but no visual or chime; just the dock's hardware starts. I tried booting without the 16 mb ram expansion card and I tried the reset button. I'm now very lost and the manual only gave me the idiot's guide: Plug it in, Turn it on, Hit reset button.

Sigh...

EDIT-I tried taking out the RAM card a second time and it booted. Good news is that my alunminum foil fixed the trackpad

EDIT 2- Yup it's the RAM card; I guess better that than the mobo as I was going to be replacing it with a 48 mb one anyway(unless of course, the entire ram bus is bad and I waste 50 bucks on a RAM card I can't use)

To answer the original question, I have an e-Machines EtherDock which works with my Duo 2300c. It works for file transfers and internet (as much as internet can be said to work with OS 8.0 and Netscape Communicator 4.08.)

I have a second EtherDock which works when the moon is in the second house or some other requirement I haven't yet pinned down. xx( Some days it is bulletproof. Some days it can't make an ethernet link.

Excellent, that is what I needed to hear. I've since decided more-so on an asante etherdock rather than an emachines, but this is welcome news.
