Error type 41

I am trying to install OS 7.0 on a Classic. Everytime I boot up from the Install disk it goes through the happy mac and welcome screen and then I get an Error Type 41 warning. I tried restarting with extensions off but get the same result.

Anyone know what it's trying to tell me? There is no OS on the HDD that I am aware of, it will only boot via floppy or from the ROM.

Thanks!

Given that you have sufficient ram, then kallikak's got it right. Either the disk itself has a problem, or the drive needs some TLC. Fix that and you should be good to go.

Well I am trying another floppy. At least no error 41. But for some reason the HD is not being recognized. It spins up though. Any thoughts? This Classic is getting real close to being a parts donor...

Well, it's always possible that the HD is simply dead. What checks have you made to determine that the HD is not recognized? If it's simply not mounting, that's one thing. If you've fired up a disk utility and it can't see it, that's another.

In any event, check the easy stuff first (connectors, termination). If a disk utility can see the drive, a simple reformat and reinstall might bring it back to life.

Thank you guys. Your words of wisdom have saved a Classic from the bin. I ran Disk Tools and formatted the drive. System 7 is now installed and it boots from the HD.

For information's sake, I used the original floppy that kept giving Error 41 - all went fine until I installed the "print" disk; it came up as being labeled wrong or something and so did the "tidbits" disk. No big deal I guess, I'll never hook it to a printer and at least it boots up now. :)

Glad to hear that you kept at it until you triumphed. Now your challenge is to get that Classic online. You haven't lived until you've dog-paddled the Web with an 8MHz 68000... :)
