EMERGENCY! CRT hissing during maintenence

Hi,

I was removing the hard drive from one of my Mac SE/30s. I had just pulled off the stubborn molex connector when I heard a hissing noise, like gas being released. I know CRTs are vacuums, but I broke a CFL once and didn't want to risk it, so I hauled my butt and got out of my room. Did the CRT just pressurize or something? Is it safe for me to go back in my room?

Thanks

Yeah, your fine.

Probably your hand hit and cracked the crt? I don't see how it's possible, but if your hand went upwards??

As long as it didn't explode your fine! Then there would be glass and lead and all sorts of other toxic stuff everywhere!

Yea, you "necked" the tube is what thats called. CRT is junk and will need replaced.

do NOT attempt to power it up with a broken CRT, the horizontal output transistors usually cant take it and will self-destruct after an arc fest.

This exact incident happened to my good tube a few years ago, so I've been using the burnt up one that came with my leaky SE/30 in 2009. If the neck made a mess (mine did) then just vacuum and clean up any little glass bits that managed to break loose. As has been said, the blown CRT is trash now. The deflection yoke can be removed, but I have never attempted this since I'm a coward around high-voltage analog stuff.

Theres a few on ebay, but expect to pay around $100+.

Id try and salvage as much as possible since these are getting hard to find.

Wow, I'm actually selling two modern LCD monitors tonight for 100 bucks haha. It's ok though, I'm parting out this machine anyways. The Asante ethernet card I found in there will have to carry the weight of the money I need to make lol

Look for a cheap not working Compact Mac 2nd hand where the tube is still good. Buying one loose would probably cost you more than buying a complete Compact Mac in sold as is state.

You can swap tubes between all Compact Macs with the exception of the classic II that has another Yoke on some revisions.

I have a working se/30 CRT that has a slightly burned in menu line (visible when off). Would give up for 35 dollars including shipping. Pm me if interested

Good to know, I think I read that somewhere. Thanks for the reminder!

I think I'll be parting this guy out, so I'll have to pass it up. If I need it for another project, I'll hit you up!

Don't they all have the burned menu bar? Lol!
Oddly enough the one I bought in the worst shape for the most money actually has super clean guts. No burn-in, no cap leaks, no battery corrosion. The one I just broke the CRT in great physical shape, but the guts are worst case scenario; all the things I just mentioned.

Hmm, I may look into that. I did discharge the CRT so I can't imagine there's much risk involved after that...

Thanks for telling me, I wasn't completely sure I indeed broke the CRT until I actually looked at it further (I just snapped off the nipple in the back) and I may have tried to test it....  :(

I did the exact same thing with mine when I first got it. Had the machine face down, pulling on the Molex, and banged the CRT neck when the cable came loose. I got a replacement CRT from eBay for about $40.

This guy:

sells some decent CRTs. I bought one of the 'B' models (slight burn in/dimness), but I can't see the burn in and it's plenty bright for me. The CRT came really well packaged and sealed (took me quite bit of time to remove all the shrinkwrap). Took me a little bit of fiddling to adjust my old yoke (and I could probably mess with it further to get the screen to stretch to the edges), but it was quite easy. Best way to adjust it is to put a mirror in front of the computer so that you can see which way to turn the yoke without reaching around and possibly coming into contact with the CRT anode. I'm kinda glad I did break the original tube as I'm a lot more confident working with hardware like this now. Had to disassemble the floppy drive to reset the eject  motor. That was fun.

Yes. But. He's selling one as a "B" rating, with bent pins, and doesn't show the end of the nipple.

I've also seen other sellers that claim "working", but the picture shows the nipple clearly broken off...

Apple Macintosh CRT w/ Yoke 128K 512K Plus Classic SE SE/30 Tube 630-5144 B Cond

I need a CRT as well, and I'm just so afraid of getting one with a broken vacuum, and spending time & money dealing with refunds / returns ..

Maybe I'll figure out how to put a LCD, or other alternative in there, some day.
