eMate 300 in box!

Hi guys!

After a long absence from both the MLA and the collector lifestyle (moving from a big house to a small apartment will do that...), I have made a neat acquisition. After work the other day, I stopped by one of the better thrift stores here in Albuquerque (the same place I found a beige G3 for $7.50 a year or so ago), and found an Apple Newton eMate 300 in the box, for the princely sum of $12.99! The box is pretty worn, but certainly better than nothing. Inside I found the eMate itself, in seemingly good condition, and a good stack of original manuals and registration cards. Unfortunately there's no power supply, so I'll be hunting for one (the one I used to have wasn't actually for the eMates and never seemed to work very well), but physically the eMate looks solid - the hinges are strong, and the case is very nice, as is the screen. The stylus is gone, but I've got one with my previous 'Mate.

Interestingly, the shipping label on the box indicates that it was sent to a teacher in a New Mexico school... but on the bottom of the eMate itself is a "PROPERTY OF APPLE COMPUTER" sticker, along with an inventory code. Perhaps this was an evaluation or demo eMate? Have you guys seen anything similar before?

All-in-all, a cool find - now does anyone have an extra AC adapter?

PS It's good to be back at the MLA forums! I've missed you guys! :beige:

Nice find! I have an eMate 300 that I picked up from a school a couple of years ago. Love the thing, but the only thing that irks me is the black marker that was used on the back of the LCD display. Thankfully the markings have faded some and they seem to blend in with the dark green.

Enjoy! :)

Rubbing alcohol will often remove marker doings, with a little persistence and ideally used in conjunction with a mildly abrasive cleaning sponge or the like. These did the trick on an eMate in my possession that had similarly been marked on the bottom as belonging to some school or other.

Thats a great deal for $13. Does the sticker on the bottom look like this? This is one on the bottom of my Powerbook G4 12" that I got on ebay. Sorry the quality is so poor, but it reads, "Property of Apple Computer, INC. Expensed Equipment"

Nope, the sticker on the eMate I found is (if I'm remembering it correctly - it's been a couple days since I last looked) yellow with a red Apple logo. However, given that the eMate is considerably older than the G4 PowerBook that you bought, it stands to reason that the design of the sticker might have changed in the meantime. I'll snap a few pics and share them later tonight or tomorrow!

I tried to see if Mr. Clean Magic Eraser would take it off as I know it does great with permanent markers (was able to remove a marker nick that my youngest did to the LCD of my iMac G5 with ease), but it wouldn't remove the permanent marker....probably because it had been marked when it was new MANY years ago. All it seemed to do was dull some of the finish on the plastic, though I hope it was only the effect of years of crud that it's collected over the years in a school.

I'll give the alcohol treatment a try. Hopefully that will give better results. :beige:
