email on a Color Classic

Hello all,

I've been trying to setup an email client on my Color Classic, but the problem is that all email clients available do not support stmp authentication, so no ISP will accept my email for delivering. :disapprove:

Can anybody point me to an email account I can sign up to that will allow me to resolve this issue?

How do you guys do it on your Classic Macs?

thanks a lot for any help,

Marcio

Try Baton Mail. Haven't tried it myself.

Baton Mail is a small application that you run in the background on your computer. You configure your email client to send outbound email to Baton Mail, which in turn performs any necessary authentication with your ISPs mail server, and then relays the outbound mail.
This will let you use those old email clients. :D

Guide to setting up Baton Mail

Applelinks.com article. Says Baton Mail needs Mac OS 7.6.1 and higher. So you'll need to update if you don't have it.

Hope this helps!

I've been using Baton Mail for a while now with no problems. I'm using it on System 7.5.5, so ignore the 7.6.1 requirement.

Thanks a lot for the valuable tip/information.

I'm still struggling with this. I've installed Barton Mail and I'm able to receive email in Eudora Light, but I can't send email. Barton Mail tells me " cannot authenticate" with the server.

I've done some research an a users reports that Baton version 0971 is more stable. Unfortunately when I Unstuffit it turns into a partial archive (the icon for the stuffit file is "cracked" in the middle) so I can't get the application. On my OSX laptop I can open it with Unarchiver and if looks fine, but I can't transfer it to the Colour Classic (on 7.5.5) because it is not MacBinary encoded (ftp doesn't get it right between the 2 macs).

What email service do you run? What email client? On mac Classic?

Many thanks,

Marcio

If your provider requires SSL on SMTP, then you're out of luck. Baton Mail works only with authentication, NOT SSL.

Here's a possible workaround: when I check my mail via POP3 my ISP allows me to send mail without authorization for 30 minutes... try checking your mail on your main computer first and then see if you can send mail from the CC.

Getting email working on a classic Mac is obviously fairly desirable.

It shouldn't be too hard either. It's possible to download the code for Eudora Lite 1.3.1 (I think that version).

It should be reasonable to add ssl / tls support using the open source http://www.yassl.com/.

However, I haven't managed to compile Eudora Lite under ThinkC 5 yet though xx(
