Not really related with Apple, but anyway, a couple of weeks ago i found a Kobo reader for cheap (10 €) and almost new (including the sceen cover)

Was thinking about holidays, and a small tablet is always better than a couple of old-fashioned and heavy books.

The Kobo has 3 Gb of capacity (around 3000 books) and is able to be upgraded using a micro sd card.

Moreover, wifi is available, so internet is possible (but the black and white screen is poor for surfing)

I downloaded a few books including the Steve Jobs biography, and started using it daily.

But at the same time, my wife started using it also, and asked if i can find another one (but this kind of seek can usualy be long)

I was lucky enough yersterday to find another, a more basic unit for even cheaper (3 €) with some issues (no charger and sad looking)

After a quick charge, the reader came back to life but was stuck and irresponsive, a reset solved the problem.

Man, the word "gigaoctet" is just /weird/. When I was using a French translation of Windows, it weirded me out, along with the arbitrarily resized dialog boxes that make no sense for their contents.

On the e-reader: is there any sort of firmware hacks for it? There's all sorts of cool ideas, mainly because they're the only things you can buy with e-ink screens.

The Kobo reader can be hacked to boot a specific version of Android, but the screen quality is poor except for a book, on the other hand, when wifi is turned down the main battery is good for two months.

Yes, in France Octet is used instead of Byte, just a language weirdness.

I got a Sony reader last year and planned to use it to better access all my PDF manuals so I wasn't near a computer

it's great for textfiles but a bit sluggish on photographs and for some PDF's it's outright unusable, taking sometimes upwards of ten seconds to turn a page.

I have a Kobo Touch which I picked up in December. My favourite aspect of it beyond the e-ink display is the internal micro SD slot. Not only is there an external micro SD, but the device's built in storage is removable too. I picked up some extra cards so I could mess around with the software without losing the original soft/firmware. I've played with a couple of Android and Linux homebrew builds for it. On the stock firmware, the Pocket app is awesome. I can add an article to Pocket from any of my other devices with a tap or click and read it whenever I want on the Kobo's e-ink display.
