Does Mac 512kE front (case) fit perfectly w/ Mac Plus back?

I have a bizzare compact Mac:

Front says M0001E, but the back has the typical 25pin SCSI port (with the alien pre-standard SCSI symbol on it), and the "About Mac" says it's got 2560KB of RAM, so I assume it's a Mac Plus (without looking inside). Thus my question above... Could this Mac have been put together from two separate parts?

Lastly, is the 2MB memory upgrade common or rare? Anyone got a link to what it ought to look like?

Thanks for any and all arcane knowledge!

Apple sold an upgrade from the 512k to a Plus which basically involved swapping out the motherboard, floppy drive and rear case (since the port layout was different) with new components. I'm guessing this is what you've got.

As for the 2MB upgrade... since the Plus motherboard takes standard 30-pin SIMMs, 2MB is quite common. You could even upgrade it to 4MB for next to nothing by finding 4x 1MB SIMMs.

A! Interesting. Didn't know about the front-back swap thing. That explains it! Thanks for the info.

As for the memory, I confused it with the regural 512k and forgot about the SIMM sockets. Thanks for the clear-up.

da9000 you definitely need some "edufication" (to quote a well known US president), check out this site which does a good job: http://homepage.mac.com/chinesemac/earlymacs/

Are there any other serial numbers on it, e.g. case bottom? Also what does the rear label say and does the colour match the case front?

Thanks equill for spreading the word about the database ...

What can I say? I'm a learnin' guy! A neophite in this compact subject matter if ya will...

That's an awesome site - the chinese (?!) mac site! Thanks for the link.

As for the questions: none on the bottom, rear label is missing, colour does not match perfectly. It seems ~tl was most probably right on the mark.

Checked out Equill's suggestion. I'll try to add this Mac to the db.

Cheers
