Disassembling an AppleCD 24x CD-ROM drive

I'm trying to take apart and clean the AppleCD 24x CD-ROM drive from my 9600 but I can't actually seem to get at the laser assembly...I've taken all the screws out and still can't get the top shell off, and I can't find a guide anywhere online on how to do it. Can anyone help me?

Because there are 2 hidden clips right where the screws go through the covers on the bottom. If you look really really closely, you will see a tiny plastic tab sticking up next to the bent metal screw tabs. 1 on each side.

Push those to "clear" the tabs and poof she pops apart.

Got a picture? I managed to get the black plastic bit to disconnect at two corners but not the other two.

No pictures. All my stuff is put back together/fixed.

Depends on the drive, I have only found 2.

Also the tray has to be open, and the front bezel/faceplate has to be removed.

Well disassembling the drive and cleaning the laser didn't make the drive work, but I appreciated the help nonetheless!

Guess I'll try out one of my older, slower drives.

Well I knew that wasnt gonna work. lol.

The laser itself is weak and you will need to adjust the output level of the laser diode itself, which is a pot on the side of the laser. Thatll get it going for awhile at least.

very small flat blade screwdriver. Tweak only a tiny bit at a time. If you go too far you risk burning out the diode.

Plus in the beginning I wasnt sure what you were attempting to do other than clean the drive, maybe the tray was sticking? One could only assume.

If you said, Wont read discs, then I would have said the optical pickup is bad and needs re-adjusted.

Anyways, I got an 8X drive that has a bad RF Amp IC that I need to fix someday.

Yeah, the drive doesn't read disks. Found this out the hard way.

It spins up, spins down. Never actually stays spinning to read the disk like a CD drive should.
