Digital Audio Troubles Again

So I have once again tried to upgrade the processor in this machine. I got another sonnet upgrade but this time it was for a pretty good price and I had the option to return it so I was like why not. Anyways, I have tried to install the card many times but even though it boots up the mac sometimes it is not able to keep os x open for long. It will keep the os x open for a short period of time and then crash. Since I know this processor is working, I have to believe that the connector on my logic board that I plug the processor into is the problem. My original 733 mhz processor still works fine when I swap it back in. So I am thinking some how the old board connector and old processor warped a little bit together so that they work with each other but new processor don't fit quite right. Could this be a correct opinion. I am really considering just buying a $20 Digital Audio logic board on ebay if this is the case. Do you think I could be right?

Could you provide more info - do you get a complete lock up, kernel panic or mass of text on screen? Does the Sonnet card require you to run a firmware patch, can you alter the cache settings using CPU Director? Is the CPU overheating?

If you still suspect the CPU connector to be flaky, I'd check carefully for any pin damage and also clean the connnector with electronic cleaning solvent.

Well what happens is that os x tiger boots up to my usual desktop. I can tell there is a large increase in speed, so the processor seems to be working. The problem is only some of my applications work, and some don't. For example, spotify will always work, but tenfourfox never will. I also cannot install any new applications, if i try the computer will just report an error. The screen also has a few small lines on it. What I mean is that a few pixels will be distorted in different places, like the spotlight icon might have a few black pixels on it, or a few jagged lines will be running across an icon on the dock. Although there are the problems I mentioned such as some apps crashing immediately and some distortion in the picture on the screen, the computer will seem to run fine for awhile. Then, no matter what after about 10-15 minutes the entire computer will freeze and turn grey with the big picture of the power button on the screen that tells you to restart your computer. If you need any more information just let me know.

Video corruption from a faulty CPU module is a new one for me. :-/

Anyways, the "please restart your computer" screen is a kernel panic. If OSX dumps core you can see what happened right before it crapped out.

What video card are you using? Is it the nVidia card that sometimes came with the G4 DA's, or is it an ATI card? I had similar issues when the nVidia card on my DA began taking a dump. Swapped in a Rage 128 Pro that I had from a parts G4 DA. No problems. Eventually replaced that card with a reflashed Radeon 9700. I didn't have any issues swapping my original 533MHz processor with a 1.2GHz G4. Computer continued to run normally. Just a lot quicker.
