Different 128k models

Hello! I noticed that some very early Macs have the "Macintosh" badge in the rear case while others have a "Macintosh 128k" badge. Is there a difference? I assume the latter is of less interest to enthusiasts?

Yes that’s it, early units were Macintosh, without any further information. When the 512 was introduced at a higher cost, the 128k was still available… but a new badge was issued to display the difference.

at the same time, IIRC, a new logic board was also produced, with both labels 128 or 512.

I see. So it sounds like there isn't really much that's "collectable" about a Macintosh labeled 128k?

Not these days - the purist collector will want the "original" Macintosh, but frankly if it works and is repairable either model is worth a good bit of coin. Reproduction backplates are also around.
