DaynaPORT E/30

Now, I know there is a thread on this subject already, but I cant remember what or where...

I got one of these maybe a year or so ago, with a physically damaged IC from marring the pins.

So, I finally decided to swap the IC.

I stuck it in my SE/30, and it saw the card. link light came on, and then it linked to the router. No problems here.

Ran the diagnostic tools from the DaynaPORT disk, and it shows the hardware is OK. Not an adapter error. but OK.

Saw the ethertalk option now enabled in the network switcher. I decided to pick ethertalk, low and behold....

Error occured, switching back to localtalk. what? ok... So then i decided to install the DaynaPORT driver. that caused a machine freeze before it would get to the desktop. Every time. This was system 7.5.3

So, I formatted the HDD and installed a fresh copy of Vanilla 7.1

Installed the DaynaPORT driver first. rebooted.

The ethertalk option was available in the networks election. Chose it, and this time no error. it switched over no problems. So I thought everything was ok, it was just my configuration.

But I go to Chooser, my file server isnt being shown. Soon as I hit appleshare, i can watch the router lights flash like crazy where its looking for a file server. So that means the card is operating. it would have to be? but nothing shows visible.

For compatibiltiy reasons, I switched both my file server and system 7.1 Se/30 back to localtalk, sees everything fine.

Then I said hell with it, and decided to format the drive again. Installing 7.5.3 and updating to 7.5.5 and going to try again, I am in the process of doing that now.

BTW, the system 7.5 network access disk also shows ethertalk, but it gives me the same error. Funny thing is, it doesnt tell me WHAT error. it just says some error occured switching to ethertalk, switching back to localtalk.

any ideas?

Nevermind. I installed system 7.5.5, all the updates, including open transport 1.3, then installed the driver.

Now it works. Go figure. I guess its not compatible with system 7.1

It may still be compatible with 7.1, but I've had similar issues.  Reinstalling the drivers (or EtherTalk, or MacTCP, or something along those lines) eventually made it work.

Yea, but from a completely fresh install? either way it was odd... But...

Nothing worked if I was using the network control panel that selected ethertalk/localtalk.

But once I updated everything which removes the network control panel, and replaces it with the AppleTalk control panel, that worked.

It gets even more weird. my IIx does the same thing.

If I mount a network share on my OS 8.6, and OS 9 machine they both do the same thing. it will freeze chooser on mount, I have to force a reboot.

Then when it reboots, its fine, it moun ts.

But no matter what, if i mount an image on the share, it freezes.

If I do a copy of any file, itll begin the copy process and hang. After awhile, it will come up saying Server unexpectedly closed.

WTF? I have been at this for hours and cant figure out a solution. This is using my G3 running 9.2 as a server.

Now, if i go back to mac os 8.6, it sees the server. BUT as soon as I click on it in chooser, it hangs. then eventually pops up saying no response or something like that. If I delete the appleshare prep, and restart, itll just freeze when choosing the server.

If i pop a CD in, and then mount only the CD drive, it wont freeze chooser, but when trying to copy a file it does the same thing. I tried installing MODE32 just to make sure it isnt a 32 bit issue, does the same thing. made no difference.

The only way I can get the Mac OS 8.6 system to not freeze or say no response, is pop a CD in and it auto-shares. Then it works. Go figure.

Both systems have larger than 2GB volumes, my 6500 mac 8.6 server has a 20GB drive for its files, Formatted as Standard. and my PBG3 has a 120GB formatted as Extended.

Went back to 7.6, reformatted the drives, Mounted only the CD and it still does the same thing...

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Reformatted it again, changed it to a single 1.5GB partition to eliminate possible issues there, does the same thing. hang on a copy and crashes.

grrr.....
