My solution for the smell is: take the case off and retrobright the case (peroxide water mix will do), leaving the soaking case AND the PCBs and chassis out in the wind and sun for a few days (bring them back inside when they're not in direct sunlight).

Smoke is usually layers of tar, so it may take a few attempts at scrubbing and retrobrighting to get it all. I've found 4 usually does it, 2-3 if I get some good breezy sunny days.
