CD open button not working

The CD push to open button on my Performa6360 is not working all the time unless i find the sweet spot.

Is there a software application to open that drawer ?

How difficult is it to take the unit apart and fix it ? There must be some lever extension that is bent out of shape.

As far as I'm aware, the CD drive cannot be opened by software unless there's a disc in the drive. The CD buttons on these systems can get hard to open if there's no shim between the button on the actual drive, and the button on the front of the case. Remove the front of the case as follows:

- take a flathead screwdriver, and put it in one of the slots underneath the front

- gently lever the screwdriver down, while pulling on the front panel. This should free that side of the front panel. Do this incredibly gently, as the front panels on these systems can go brittle and break with age

- repeat for the other side. The front panel swings upwards a bit and then comes straight off. You'll see where the button is on the CD drive. From the factory, the drive will have had a plastic shim glued to the button, but with age the glue can dry and the shim can get lost. You should be able to replace it with just about any other small piece of plastic. You don't want anything too big, just big enough to fit between the buttons. Glue it into place.

- put the front panel back onto the Mac. Reverse the steps that you took to remove the front panel, once again being very careful not to break the tabs.

Hope this helps, by the way one other thing - the 6360 is a PCI based PowerPC system, therefore threads on it should go into the PCI Power Mac & Performa forum under PowerPC Model Forums.

If you need to open the tray on boot, just hold the mouse button down, and it should pop out.

If you're on the desktop, switch to the Finder, and in the "Special" menu, there is an "eject disc" option. Also, from the desktop this is accessed by Command-E.

Yes indeed your detailed instructions really help this old guy here. Only within this year i have mastered how to install those batteries in my LC520,8500,QS G4 in addition to installing RAM and a PCI midi/audio card in the QS G4. So your instructions should allow me to fix that CD open button because lately i've had to use my trusty paper clip screw driver to pop the CD drawer open to place a CD into the tray.

So please stand by for my screams of help if i can't get the case off or back on.

Thank you for heads up about where to post my Performa6360 problems. What confusses me is in the Board index there is " 68k LC & Performa " and so i just thought that my P6360 falls into that category.

There's an Eject application and Control Strip module that Apple included with OS 9. I don't know if it works on any older systems. I'm on my laptop right now, but I'll try to upload it and post a link for you to download tomorrow. You can give it a try.

That would be great and very much appreciated.

Thank you.

That's an interesting app issued by Apple.

I'll have to burn this to a CD to get it over to the P6360 which is no problem. That's why I can hardly wait to install the USB port and/or the Ethernet port which would allow me to use a flash stick or simply go on line and download.
