Cannot install OS 8.0 on a beige G3

Hi,

I have a CD with 8.0 on it, but when I try booting it on my beige G3, I receive a message that it cannot start from this disk because the computer is kinka unknown to that OS version.

OS 8.0 should be installable on the beige G3, so why the copy I have cannot boot it?

Thanks

if it's 8.0, it should be the disc that shipped with the G3. when starting on the OS it came with, you SHOULD use the discs that came with the machine. otherwise it won't work

if you don't have the discs, you need to buy some. Go for eBay to get the discs.

What I have is a generic OS 8.0 disk. It does not specify any computer specific information.

And, just for information, why the machine specific CD is required?

Thanks

Beige G3s need OS 8.1 with an enabler to boot.
You may be right, but according to my research it came originally with OS 8.0.

In the mean time, I did something weird: I copied the OS 8.0 system folder to a partition, then upgraded it with the patch offered free on Apple's site, and it can boot a non-complete version of 8.1. It proves that 8.1 can boot on it, but nothing else.

Yep, I can confirm that. There is a special Mac OS 8 disk for the Beige G3. The standard one won't work.

However, a standard 8.5/8.6 or later CD will work fine.

I remember getting it to start from an OS 8.0 standard installation, I just needed to install it on the hard disk from a 5260, then swap the 5260 HD in to the Beige G3.

Which kinda defeats the purpose.

Humm.

Well, at least you know that now, for the record.

Lol, people with ATA HDs in their Beigies...

*smirks at his G3 without the door on and peers at it's 9GB SCSI HD connected to the SCSI card :p *

Oi, I will not put up with anyone laughing at me! :p So just how many OS X apps can you fit on that puny little drive of yours then? What's that? You installed just the OS and iLife '05 and found it was already full up? Hmmm... *winks at his G3 under the desk with its 160 GB ATA drive ;)

;)
