Can no longer print in OS 9

I have iMac G5 running OS 10.4.11 and Classic.

Until recently if I wanted to print from my MS Word 5 document in OS 9, I'd go to Chooser and select printer (HP Deskjet 940). Now when I try to select it, icon doesn't show up in box on right. If I try to print I get an error "printer not connected..."

It prints fine in OS 10, but there are things I need to print in OS 9.

Everything was working fine for over a year until last week, so driver was installed.

In Chooser in OS9 I do see the printer icon, but when I now select it, it now doesn't show up in right box under "Select a printer".

Printer is connected directly, only to iMac.

I have skills to a very high degree in a number of areas. With computers it's like nails on a blackboard. I found an independent guy who used to charge me $25/hr. which I was happy to pay. He now wants $90/hr. and I've been paying him, there are so few techs who know OS9. He's done all my work for years.

I downloaded driver and it showed up in two areas. I assigned it to download to my hard drive which show up as a 404kb file. Also a 10Mb "download.sit appeared on my desktop. Neither when i double click on Sit, or drag it onto Stuffit Expander app, nothing happens.

I feel my blood pressure rising again over this and am getting a headache. If anyone would be kind enough to call me and help, I'd be most grateful. Please e-m me at garygphotog@shaw.ca. For your help, I'll send you a copy of something very special I won an actual medal for.

Thanks for all you folks help, and I sorry if I seem stupid to you. I'm not, but "the computer and me we disagree, I hate it and it hates me.

Problem fixed:

After hours of frustration, I finally found and fixed problem. I have a laCie back up drive. I had to go into my main HD and Lacie drive, and in System Preferences, Print and Fax removed items in Print Queue. This is what was preventing printing in Classic.

Curiously though, now (though never before), in my Dock Applications area, the printer icon is there, though I didn't put it there, and when I open System Prefs in OS 10, an icon for it is there as long as System Prefs window is open.

Any comments?

Thanks to those who replied

Gary
