Boot CD for a Performa 600

Hi all,

I'm having a devil of a time creating a boot disk to get 7.1 installed on a Performa 600.  Everything I've tried hasn't worked, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.  I don't want to burn through any more CDs doing things the wrong kind of incorrect, so I'm throwing myself on the mercy of the group.

So far, I've tried making 2 CDs, one just kind of jerking around with OS X 10.4.11 and the Burn Disc command, and the other following these instructions, in the "Burning HFS CD-ROMs" section: http://lowendmac.com/2007/making-floppies-and-cds-for-older-macs-using-modern-macs-windows-and-linux-pcs/

I also have a USB 1.44 floppy drive, but for the life of me I can't make a proper restore image through Disk Utility.  Every time I format a disk, it ends up chewing through about 300k of space, making it just too small to use.  It's been a long time since I've dealt with floppies, so I'm assuming I'm missing something extremely stupid and basic, but I'm all out of ideas.

The Performa chimes and boots to a flashing question mark disk, and that's as far as I can get.

System 7.1 is great until you have to boot it for the first time. I would burn yourself a System 7.5.3 boot CD. All of the disk images are available on the Macintosh Garden. This software is/was freely available from Apple (née Computer) Inc.

This should boot it with no difficulty. Once you have it booted, you can then make proper install floppies on your P600.

This is the kind of high quality advice I've come to expect from this site, thanks!

I downloaded a file called MacOS753.cdr.  It seems like I should be able to just burn that to a CD in Disk Utility on 10.4.11 and that should work, hopefully.

make sure in burn you make the disc bootable, its an option in toast, not sure about is 10.4, its been a while.
