ATI Radeon... err...

iMac600

68020
...what is it?

It's an ATI Radeon ??? of unknown series, but based on a quick Google for part numbers i'm throwing between the 7500 and the 9000. 64mb VRAM on board. VGA, DVI and S-Video out. That's all I can tell.

Either one should be able to fire up in a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver with the correct ROM.

The challenge is finding out just what it is, best bet seems to be installing it in the IBM, get the data Windows returns and work from there.

Also on the minor side of conquests, a large block Pentium 3 cooler (to go with the 1.0GHz), a set of screws for the G4, an audio cable for the Mitsubishi Magna and 1GB of DDR.

So it's a PC card? You might as well pop the HSF off and see what's on the chip. I've come across a few Radeons like this, they don't make it easy to identify :)

Fingers crossed it's a 7000/7500/8500 (yeah!)/9000, the 9250s don't really flash.

Windows XP confirmed it. It's a Radeon 7500 AGP 64mb. :D

Now I just need to work out how to flash it... Google is giving mixed results. I've flashed nVidia's in the past but never an ATI before.

I'm getting some mixed reports the Radeon 7500 AGP 64mb can NOT be flashed for Mac systems, but the 32mb version can.

Seems every card I get is impossible to flash... still worth a shot though. We'll see how it goes.

Hrm ... a ROM for the Radeon 7500 isn't listed on TheMacElite's site ... go to The Strange Dogs forum, it's still up, you should get the definitive answer you need.

Had a look around the Strangedogs forum, seems to pretty much confirm what I already knew. There is one ROM, the Apple Computer/ATI Radeon 7500 32mb ROM. However this isn't interchangeable with the 64mb version.

So, looks like I have another useless card. First the Chaintech GeForce FX 5200, then the Gainward GeForce2 MX 64mb and now the ATI Radeon 7500 64mb.

Can I ever get an upgraded card for this?

Probably not.

I have a random Radeon mac edition card for my quicksilver too. It performs worse then the 7000 but slighty better then a rage 128..... But it has 32MB of VRAM.

What are you willing to spend? There is a plethora of Mac Edition Radeon 7000s and 7500s on offer at the moment, many of them new. I have two AGP-4 7500s, one of which is in use in this G4/733 DA, and three PCI 7000s, two of which are in Beige G4/500s. Used cards are available from tangaishi, and new from casperthug_enterprise and applemacanix. The latter has Mac Ed. 64MB 7500s available now. Hit-or-miss acquisition, even if at no cost, will not advance you very fast.

Cheers for the tip Equill, I shall take a look around tomorrow afternoon and see what I can find.

As for this card, provided I can't get it running, I may use it in one of the PC's or just return it to the IT lab. Depends on the various outcomes of my many computer related experiments. ;)
