AOL 5 for mac

I was wondering if anyone had a working link to AOL 5 for Macintosh. I want to try my duo on our dialup.

Thanks,

Ted

I haven't made any luck on aol, but I did learn a bit about connecting to dialup on os 8.5 . It told me to use a PPP application. I added it to the extensions and typed in the needed info. When I hit connect it fails and tells me the port is busy/in use. Anyone know what would be causing this? I'm not sure what would be using the internal modem in the duo that would need to be disabled.

You're pretty much wasting your time with that. I tried hooking up my 5215CD to AOL when I still had my account with them prior to switching to high speed via a 56k external modem, and although I was able to connect after several attempts, you are extremely limited as to what you can access since the old HTML formats are no longer recognized, and it's downright slow even when you do have a stable connection.

Besides, AOL hasn't supported the Mac platform for awhile, which may lead to some unnecessary complications. I recall receiving a dialog box stating that I couldn't log on (or the connection timed out) because AOL no longer supported Mac software versions, so I had to reboot, and try again.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. I'm still trying to get it to connect to my aol service through PPP though. I'm not exactly sure how, as it keeps saying the port is busy. I booted with all extensions off and then PP wouldn't open b/c open-transport wasn't running. I went ahead and re-enabled everything I could find with open transport in it under extensions, but after a reboot it still said no open-transport. Ideas?

I was connected to AOL with a duo back in '03 with AOL 4.0. That is the max supported on 68k. You aren't too limited once you gain connection you can use a newer browser, icab or whatever that uses AOL's connection. That was 7 years ago..maybe it still works. Try AOL canada 4.0 for mac too if US gives problems. You just have to manually add the american number.

I've been having trouble getting my aol 3 even onto the duo. I managed to lose my dropstuff w/ee so I can't multi segment it over. If I'm lucky ZipIt will forever fix my issues with transferring on multi segments. And by fix; I mean remove stuffit from the picture

And oh yah- Thank god for sheepshaver!

EDIT- Ok, I got AOL 3 on there. However, it gives me a generic "failed to communicate with modem" error. I'll try disabling some more extensions and figure out the issue once I'm done typing my paper.

A few comments about this...

1. I was an AOL subscriber back in the day, having used it on 68Ks when version 2.x was current. I also used it on OS 9 on my clamshell until I got a DSL connection. AOL occasionally will phase out support for older versions. I had been using 2.7 on a Mac Plus (!) as late as 2001. However, it no longer worked when I tried connecting in mid-2002. Given the fact nine years have passed since then, I'd guess support for 3.x and other older versions has ceased. The last time I connected to AOL was in 2004 with 4.x.

2. Although I'm a bit fuzzy on the specifics, I do remember AOL being a bit quirky on OS 9 in terms of accessing the modem (the clamshell's internal 56K). I recommend a reinstall of the OS followed by an install of the AOL client. Of course, this is dependent on the software still being supported. Introduce your extensions and control panels one at a time to isolate potential conflicts.

3. Just for clarification--I'm assuming you have a PPC-based Duo?

Yup, I have a nice 2300c courtesy of Flyingtoaster here. I believe FT did a complete install before sending it to me. All I've installed since then was startup doubler and the 2300c trackpad update(and now aol 3). I don't have an SCSI CD-Drive, so I can't really do a complete install anyway.

I just didn't have time to do extensions yesterday. I was typing a paper until 9:30 my time.

However, If anyone would be so kind as to point me to a copy of AOL 5 I would be forever gracious. Once I find 5, I'm sending it and 3 to old version, emaculation, and possibly LEM to see if anyone wants to host them and keep them safe.

I have an AOL 5.0 CD that I got free from a supermarket waaay back over 10 years ago. I don't know if it will work in the US but I suppose I could burn it, though I havn't had any luck with the software or CD-R's. I think 5.0 was the last AOL that worked on pre OSX machines, and was a pretty good version too. I remember on the PC we didn't update it 'til AOL 8.0.

I thought I had a copy of AOL 5 handy on my file server, but I don't. I'll dig around. I know I have it installed on the 1400, but I don't know where the installer went.

Glad to know 5 is stable. Speaking of 8, it is the latest I will install on any of my older PC's. By the time 9 came out, AOL was losing money. To combat this, they made it impossible to uninstall. It also bogs everything down with its startup items that are almost impossible to disable. I look forward to seeing what you guys come up with. Hopefully I will have some time tonight to play with getting the modem to work. I might also update it to 8.6 .

Downloaded fine with a left click for me...

:scrambled: There is a PPCMLA....?

And, THANK YOU

EDIT - I got it onto the duo, but anyone know a way to bypass the 32mb machine RAM requirement? (Aside from getting more RAM)

Apparently, it only requires 16mb under system 7.5.5 . Thank goodness I have a backup of all my previous system version on the docks internal drive.

EDIT- Correction- That info is for aol 4. This is a helpful site for the various requirements of the various aol versions.

Alright, AOL 3 is fine for the moment. Right now, I can't seem to get the modem to work. I keep getting a modem busy type warning. I have over half the extensions disabled.

Edit - FOUND IT! The problem is OpenTpt Serial Arbitrator. Although, problem is not solved. With it enabled it says modem is busy and with it disabled it can't communicate with the modem. Since I'm still in 8.5 all my OpenTpt is still 2.0.1 . I may upgrade to 8.6, or simply grab the serial arbitrator from OpenTpt 2.0.3 and see if that fixes it. Thoughts?

To finally put an end to this:

The issue was with a lack of a "driver" for the express modem. While looking through the original install, I found the needed extensions and control panels. Aol 3 will now dial-out properly. The numbers have long been disconnected but at least I got the modem to work. Also, just for the record, the extensions and panels are running just fine under 8.5, despite being designed for 7.x .

I tried AOL 5 on my Wallstreet II 300, and it dialed out like a dream, got the numbers, and overall works fine. VERY SLOW, but fine. It works quicker and renders better if you connect with AOL and then run IE 5 for the actual browser. I'd imagine classilla to be even better.
