An OS X Question from Jack Thomas

This question was posted in the software forum in a thread about System 7.0.1. Some have accused Mr. Thomas of being a spammer, although I am under the impression that he is simply new to forums such as this one and is not a spammer at all but instead a Mac user in need of some help.

Here is the question Mr. Thomas posted:

After upgrading from OS X 10.5.8 to 10.6(and 10.6.1) my control panel Security does not open but crashes. With the upgrade to 10.6.1 the control panel now says "loading Security (32 bit" but will not open the Security control panel. All other control panels icons work on my duel 2.93 Mac Pro. Does anyone else have this issue?

Since I do not have 10.6.1 I cannot answer this question. Hopefully someone else can help a fellow Mac user out.

Ah, he had a link in his signature to an Indian data entry website. That screams spammer to me. Anyway, the post, and all related posts have been removed.

Apple doesn't provide a control panel called "Security". He probably needs to uninstall or update whatever 3rd party software it's part of.

I have a Security panel on my 10.6 System Preferences. It's under the "personal" group and is represented by a picture of a house with what appears to be a safe lock on it. This is an Apple control panel.

Also, even if Mr. Thomas turns out to be a spammer, there may be others with this problem.

I reckon you guys (moderators) are just a little bit over zealous in cleaning up this forum. When it's getting to the point that a friend has to post question on behalf of another friend coz you have deleted his brand-new-account, then you're too zealous.....

I bet it was another one of those "inteligent" spammers that reads other posts and assembals a post based on them,m and it had just read the Snow Leopard thread before spamming.

I can see your point...but when has that happened? I don't think we've ever received a complaint for accidentally banning someone who isn't a spambot. Yes, the post looked completely legit, but as I said, his signature contained a link to an Indian data entry company, and I don't really think thats something that a legit member would do.

Never happened before, never had any complaints? Yeah it's not often a new (and deleted) user has a friend on the forum to bring it to your attention....if it was me and I got deleted straight away from a forum, I wouldn't stick around to complain about it.

So we should delete all new users if they have a link in their sig?

I'm going to talk to the other mods, they may hold a different opinion...but I just find it quite suspicious that a member signs up, and has a link in his signature to a business like that.

Also, the user hasn't been deleted yet, only his post.

We see this type of spam-bot a lot. They make seemingly innocent posts (which are often slightly incoherent as it seems they assemble them from snippets of other posts, as macgeek417 said) but have a link to a spam website in their signature. This is purely to increase the Google page ranking of their website, since that is based on the number of incoming links from other websites. So each post that they manage to get their signature link in to helps to increase their ranking. Of course we're not going to remove the account of every member who signs up and puts a link in their sig. However, some (like that one) are clearly spam.

Also, can I please remind everybody of the final clause in the Forum Rules:
