A/UX Network based install?

Hi,

I have the A/UX media and an SE/30 to install on, but no external SCSI CDROM drive to connect to my SE/30. Is it possible to perform a network based install of A/UX if I mount the CD on another machine and share it via AppleTalk?

I had a quick look at the FAQ but it didnt specifically mention it so I thought I'd ask here.

You do need to boot from a floppy and that floppy looks for a CD so I don't think you can do a net install unless you hack something.

If you have a IIx, IIcx or IIci you could try doing the install on that machine then swap the hard disks.

I got AU/X running on a IIvx by installing on a IIci and swapping the disk (and a bit of tinkering).

At one time I even made a 100Mb ZIP disk as a bootable A/UX disk for disaster recovery purposes.

Yeah, no IIxyz's to try and build on instead so it looks like I need to find an old external SCSI CD-ROM drive. Oh well, probably handy to have one of those anyway (too bad I got rid of all mine all those years ago!).

Beware not all external CD-Rom drives are supported by A/UX!

I have an old Toshiba drive in a LaCie enclosure, and it was a total no-go for A/UX. Switched the Toshiba witn an internal Apple CD-600 from another Mac, and everything went fine!

Doh! Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely try to get an Apple one then (this could take a while).
