8600/250

Responding to a curb alert about an old Mac on Freecycle, I went looking and found a Powermac 8600/250 with a scanner,keyboard, mouse and monitor. I've been looking for a faster machine to run OS 7.6.1 on and this is a bit faster than my 9500/200, so that's good. The bad news is that the search for a 300/350mhz 8600/9600 continues.

You could always just drop a 350 MHz 604e into that 8600...

I could, but it really wouldn't be the same. I'd also have to spend some money to get the CPU. There's a 300mhz 604e card on ebay right now for $28.00 plus shipping, which is more than I am willing to put into this. I have a NewerTech G3 card that I can put in if I need a speed boost.

Thanks. At first I wasn't sure exactly what it was until I yanked out the CPU card and saw the jumper settings for 250,300,350, and 400mhz. I knew the 300 and 350 were Mach V CPU's but I was shaky as to whether the 250 was or not. I thought the 300 was the only Mach V in the 8600 lineup. I could upgrade this with a 9600 motherboard and 350 CPU, but I'd still like to be able to post a conquest of a genuine 9600/350 someday.

Apparently those are only "indicator" resistors. The real clock setting resistors are elsewhere.
