8.6 crashing on a Power PC upgraded Quadra?

I've been using the Sonnet 8.5 enabler to run 8.5 on my Power PC upgraded Quadra, and it seems to run well enough. So I figured I'd give 8.6 a try, but after running the upgrade installer and rebooting the machine just dies with an "illegal instruction" on boot. Quickly, and even with no extensions.

Supposedly this method should work fine (so says the internet anyway), despite not being supported by Sonnet. Anyone have any ideas?

I guess I'll try a clean install and see what happens, but it's odd.

After more trial-and-error, the answer appears to be to do a clean install of 8.6 instead of an upgrade.
Strange - Apple's 8.6 installer installs 8.5 and runs the 8.6 upgrade (look in the installers folder on the CD).

You're doing better than me. It crashed during the install on my IIci, I ended up just staying with 8.5.1 on mine.

8.5 installer crashed once for me, but it's all been good since.

Oh, I only know of a single version of the Sonnet enabler, are there multiple? This is specifically the "Sonnet Presto PPC" enabler.
I seem to remember a thread on this topic a few years ago on 68kmla.org where a rare newer version had been found and was posted in the thread.
I'll go look for it when I get home.

The 8.5 System enabler was hard to find at all for a long time, was borderline lost. You might be thinking of that?

I think that you have it. I may be thinking of that.
Took me a stupidly long time to find it (but it doesn't matter because I also put it on Macintosh Garden)

Yeah that's exactly what I'm using and it's wonderful.

I can't, however, seem to get 9.1 to work, though it seems like theoretically it should. Not sure why...I'm gonna try changing the gusd's manually and see if that works any better.

I also noticed 8.5+ removes the DAFB drivers, and the enabler doesn't add them back, which seems less than ideal. Obviously it works anyway but it seems to have some weirdness as a result.

Nope, that doesn't work any better. It displays the happy Mac, then goes to a grey screen, and hangs.

I'm not convinced this works despite the internet saying it does...
