7.1 vs 7.5.3 on a Color Classic

Hi all,

I'm setting up my new Color Classic and it came with 7.1 on it so I copied 7.5.3 to my SCSI2SD and replaced the OS with the newer one. I immediately noticed a significant slow down in boot time and general response. Is 7.5.3 that much slower than 7.1? or is there something I'm missing?

I have it on a 350MB spindle drive with 10MB of RAM, 32bit is on, 256k disk cache, virtual memory at 20M, no RAM disk, monitor at 256 colors.

Yea, I went with 7.1. I'm searching for a copy of 7 Pro (7.1.1) Can't find it anywhere. 7.1.1 has AppleScript so I can run Dragthing.

Have you taken out everything you don't need out of the System Folder?

I just went with 7 pro (7.1.1). That's what the cc came with anyway. If I can find a logic board I'll make it a mystic. 640x 480 sounds pretty enticing and will allow me to play better games on it.

7.1 is definitely the way to go on these with the original 030 motherboard.

I'm lucky that I have a "Mystic" one, that's on 7.5.5 and that's spritly to say the least!

Personally I follow these rules from experience but there's no true right or wrong:

68k and 020: System 6.0.8

16MHz - 25MHz 030: System 7.1(.1)

32MHz - 40MHz 030: System 7.5.5

040: System 7.5.5, 7.6.1 or 8.1 (OS 8 for 33MHz and above)

601 PPC: 7.6.1 or 8.1

603 PPC: 8.6 to 9.2.2

G3: 9.2.2 to early OSX.

That's a pretty pragmatic set of rules. Usually I like to go with the system version it came in the box with just for authenticity. I put these rules in my Apple Notes for reference, Thanks!
