384MB ... of 30 pin RAM!

I had some money sitting in Paypal, and couldn't resist: 24 x 16MB 30-pin modules from a Quadra 950 for $100. One of my most expensive upgrades purchased, but when it works out to $4.17 a stick, that's OK and I'm set for fixing up a few more Macs now.

Eight sticks look low profile, so I'm also set for some SE/30 maxing out! My Quadra 950 has a mixture of RAM I cannot work out what configuration (~ 100MB in total) so looking forward to a painfully slow startup with 256MB :)

Very nice! My LC630 has 132MB and it takes eons to run through the memory tests...be interesting to see how long the 950 takes. :) Either way - you got quite a deal there.

I saw that auction and contemplated putting a bid on, but I don't have any macs that will fit it.

A few months back I watched 4x16mb 30 pin simms on ebay Australia go for over $50.

To get it from the US you would pay that much+shipping and a long wait.

I reckon you were wise to BIN. After all, 16mb 30 pin simms are a rarity, esp in Australia.

Some say that having that much RAM in an SE/30 is overkill, but how can one have too much memory?

In any case, it should really rock that Quadra 950!

And this definitely will be worth the wait!

Nice score. :)

Yeah, I was contemplating bidding and waiting (as $100 is a fair whack for me, tightarse that I am!), but these are the sort of parts that are always useful, and I've a Mac waiting for its use.

Besides, I had to come back to work early, and it's boring as anything, so at least I've had some fun killing time :D My Q950 is pretty stock, this will make it even more fun to play around with. I couldn't fathom how much 256MB RAM would have cost to upgrade to in 1992 - anyone have any ideas on a rough cost of a 16MB 30-pin stick back then (Trash80?)

JB

For that price I would have jumped on it as well, as long as the seller isn't going to stiff you and send 4MB sticks.

Saw those and considered the possibilities...plenty of machines that I could have upgraded. Nice score, I think that is the same seller I got my other TAM from.

Couldn't wait to bung all the RAM in ... it takes about two and a half minutes for the startup memory test (chime, black screen, then to cursor). Due to the 16MB module's non-standard size (four modules are very tall, the rest are as wide as possible), it took ages to fit them all in.

Precious RAM ...

The rest - WGS95 card, Thunder GX graphics card, some other Supermac graphics card, 10/100 network card

My next plan is to try my Turbo601 100Mhz card in there, and perhaps add a spare HD or two in the top of the case.
