$30 SE/40/1MB/6.0.8 from craigslist . . .

We have progress! After one of THOSE days flailing about trying different HDDs in the attempt to get the SE to boot again, I raided the MacStack. Found an Apple ROM'd Quantum 700MB in the Quadra 700/7100/G3 and I can repeatedly get the System 7.5 needs more memory to start up. notification. So it's not the SE that's been the problem, just its 256K SIMMs affliction and failure to locate a vialable HDD until now. Next up: rummaging through the (yet to be organized) boxes of memory. ::)

More progress to report here in the Lab:

Rummaged through the big box of smaller boxes and bags-n-bags of memory and finally came up with a nice matched set of 1MB SIMMS!

I got those into the SE board and then immediately installed the Radius accelerator from oP AND the tested good Radius TPD card very roughly installed at the same time against my urges to do it per proper incremental procedures. Sure enough the system hung before the Mac icon made an appearance. Pulled the TPD card and got that wonderful RadiusRadius16/881 splash screen!

Couldn't find the HDD or at least the one I did find reported an inadequate minimum system install. enough for yesterday.

This morning I took another look at the TPD card and the SE's cable mess that had been in the way. Figured out I could push the A/B harness far enough around the drive cages, but the SCSI cable was still problematic. Slit it (only one bared wire electrical tap patched) into 5 strips like a PizzaBox cable and re-installed the VidCard. Got the Bing and the Accelerator splash screen this time, so I got the backplane/bracing set up for the BNC test routine.

Been doing a clean install of 7.1 on a 7.6.1 impaired HDD while typing this post on and off. It now boots the SE/30 testbed, just gotta find a power splitter cable to transfer TattleTech over to the new SE HDD from the SE/30 drive next. I think I'll make myself a nice brunch first, happy camper here! [:D] ]'>

Congrats! Love it when things start coming together. A few problems to overcome, sure, but that keeps the electrics working in the old ticker!

ARRRGH!  ::)   The 7.1 HDD boots like a champ, but About this Mac reports my quartet of 1MB SIMMs as a total memory config of 2,048K! System is using 1.053K with 985K free after I raped an pillaged my way through the System Folder, dumping everything I could.

It's not like I need to turn 32bit addressing on for an SE and the System allotment isn't all that bad for 7.? I need  2500K to run TattleTech 2.8.4 and I AM NOT HAPPY!

Time for a nap, I dearly love my Wednesday crash days.

edit: prolly gonna wake up with someone telling me I forgot some jumper or something and that  I'll have to tear the whole thing down again. :-/

GAH! I KNEW IT!!!!! THX. Now it's time for a stiff adult beverage and that nap now  .  .  .

.  .  .  after I clean all the MacCrap off the bed. ::)

Well, after a nice honey bourbon and a couple of hours of recharging on the rack, I'm b-a-a-a c-k! [:)] ]'> I got it torn down without incident, we'll see how the rest goes.

< /Independence Day >

It's all back together, R35 is mounted on the wall, well, it's actually stuck in the magnetic parts dish that's stuck to the side of the triple-decker, but you get the idea.

AtM finally says total memory is 4,096K and that the System is using an additional 5K. TattteTech 2.8.4 starts, but then says it's run out of memory before running a test. I liked that 2,500K figure it originally quoted me. A 3,039K footprint leaving a whole lotta nada available is ridiculous. But I'm happy again. Took some pics to post later on in the thread, figuring out how to rig up a BNC cable to see if I can squeeze a Radius splash screen outta the TPD card next. [:)] ]'>

Sorry I'm not following your notion, but what is the "triple-decker".

Good luck with the TPD card.

I like to use 7.0.1 on the SE instead of 7.1, it feels like it uses slightly less memory.

Triple-decker wheeled mechanic's tool box stack. It's in the hallway next to the bathroom door/across from the laundry closet. It's within sight of the TeakHackStation hanging there like a head mount trophy.  }:)

Maybe more as a reminder to go by the book. I'll be tearing this thing down again. Someone must have replaced the HDD at some point but failed to re-install the disk access LED, gotta find a replacement eventually. But the new drive is in and purring away. ROM level of the Radius16 will probably require knocking the 7.1 install back to 6.0.7 or 6.0.8. IIRC the only reason the SE ever hit System 7 back in the day was a plotter driver app upgrade that I wanted to use required it.

Ah yes, one of those things. I have one myself, but its got so much heavy garbage in the bottom of it, it is hardly wheelable now.

Update time with pics (finally) of progress if that's what you call it:

The 40MB HDD that was in the SE did me the favor of booting her right up on the first try. After that it died deader 'n a doornail, probably stiction. Pretty sure the one time this SE was opened up it was to replace the first HDD to die in there. The drive access LED rig was never put back in place, gotta get or make one.

Having only 7.1 on 1.44 Floppies available, I searched about for a hard drive that would boot the thing. One tried, but I was informed that 1MB of RAM just wouldn't cut it. Searched for 1MB SIMMs in the big 'ole box of memory and finally found some. Of course I forgot about the dang resistor, it's only been 29 years since I did this the first time. Tore it down again and took the head of R35 for my trophy wall. Still wouldn't boot off any of the drives so I decided to set one up on the SE/30 testbed. Pulled the 7.6.1 install's System apart and did the floppy shuffle with the 7.1 set. Now it boots both SE/30 and SE.

Couldn't find a MOLEX Y-cable, so if all you've got is a hammer  .  .  .

.  .  .  kind of fitting, I used the Radius StudioArray that's normally hooked up to the JackHammer as my aux. power supply.

The first time I assembled SE, Radius 16 Accelerator and Radius TPD card the startup BING was conspicuously absent, so I pulled the TPD card and it booted to the Accelerator's splash screen. Figured it was all the cabling bunched up behind the card so I worked out a fix:

Went together and booted to the Accelerator screen again, hooked up the new HDD for testing:

No drivers for the Accelerator or TPD card yet, but thought I'd go for the splash screen:

I used a pair of F<->F header jumper wires to connect the headers on the TPD Card to the proper(?) pins on the HD-15 VGA end of the 5-BNC cable connected to my Radius PrecisionView 2150. I used the HD-15 cable pinout.ru and was hoping for legacy support, but so far no joy on the splash screen.

But a CD full of Radius drivers came with the second TPD card I snagged. Tried to use the CD 300, but needed drivers for that! Annoying pattern emerging here.

Hooked up the Zip Drive I thought I might have killed the last time I tried to use it and sure enough it hung the system. Dead mouse cursor at the Accelerator splash screen. On a lark, decided to try powering it up after the system booted. Luckily I'd pre-loaded Iomega Guest along with TattleTech when I did the 7.1 install. When I tried to run it with the bad drive hooked up  .  .  .

KABLOOEY!!!!!!!

Not exactly the splash screen I was looking for, but shrapnel damage at TPD res. will do for now! [:D] ]'>

I knew the TPD card was pulling the PrecisionView2150 out of sleep by its powerup sound and that it was syncing up due to the steady power indication. Maybe all I really do need are the drivers?

Radius TPD/SE BNC->Monitor connection woes . . .
