Today was the NC State surplus sale.

For $26, I got a Dell Dimension 8200 (1.7 P4/256/20/DVD), a cool Braille/clicky keyboard, and an SGI Indy in Blue.

No Macs though, which was a pity.

I remember back in 97 dad got an SE/30, two SEs, two IIcxs, and a load of keyboards/mice/etc for $150. That SE/30 was my first ever computer.

What type of RAM does that Dell take? Hopefully DDR...otherwise, best of luck trying to find RAM to upgrade that baby. (most Dells from around that era need RAMBUS)

A 1.7Ghz P4 is probably RAMBUS, 256MB is decent for something that slow.

I'm guessing that a TV wont work. If you want to use standard VGA you'll need an SGI 13w3 to VGA adapter. Don't get the Sun 13w3 to VGA it wont work. Is the SGi an R4600 or better? Hope it isn't all passworded. On the upside the SGI uses standard PS2 connectors for the mouse and keyboard so any peecee keyboard and mouse will work. There are some linux distros that support the SGI. But if you get IRIX working you'll like it a lot. There is a neat little webcam that plugs into that big connector on the back.

The 13w3 adapters are fairly cheap.

The Indy requires a monitor that supports Sync-On-Green. So make sure your monitor supports that. I used mine on 3 different Sony Trinitron displays and it works. The composite jack you see is for video input.

That sure takes me back. My Indy was such a neat little box, and had the coolest start up chime.

Or just plug use a terminal (or emulator) connected to the first serial port.

They use Mac style serial connectors.

I use my SGI Indys and Indigo2s without monitors or keyboards. I use remote X11 if I need graphics.
