1710av fading away (any hope for saving, or retrofit?)

In my library of random older stuff I have a great working 1710AV with the only exception being, the monitor is starting to get quite dim. I have tried multiple things to get it back (short of taking it apart), but I am afraid the CRT itself is starting to go. My board doesn't make any cracking sounds, and I still enjoy the resolution & audio that come out of this good looking monitor.





As far as I know, my only options are to swap out the Tube / controller from a basic 1710, or another 1710AV . I haven't taken mine apart, but know from other posts on here, and manuals I have downloaded, that there is no adjustment for voltage on the Flyback, so I may be stuck having to do some other type of replacement activity with this unit

I guess I could just continue to use in dim rooms, but sad to see this thing die off .

Looked into it in the past, but not really an option since this is a Trinitron tube. I also wouldn't want to risk damaging it further unless it was a last resort.

I just got done rebuilding one. Picked one up at vcfwest off the free pile. I recapped it, but had to spend some time finding a new flyback for it. I was able to find a complete chassis on eBay, so I have 2 chassis now. Both chassis had bad caps in the smps supply, so that could be part of your problem. The smps is the top left part of the chassis. If you live close, I have a sencore rejuvenator i can.check your tube with. That way you could verify if your guns are the problem. If the guns are bad rejuvenating them would be the way to go (trinitron on not - if they're bad you have nothing to loose)

The CRT usually isn't the problem on TVs/monitors of that age. Bad caps seems much more likely.

I will look into the caps as that could be a big part of my issue and can go from there. As I have a good rework station now (did my Quadra 840av, and also an old Audi ECU), I hope to be able to get this thing working a bit better.

Valid point on the guns if that is the issue.

Do you have a reference as to what caps are needed?

My understanding with Trinitron is that you need to address each individually as they split the spectrum as opposed to using a single gun.

I can look at my spare chassis a little later and make you a list. There are quite a few caps in the neckboard as well. I ended up replacing them, but I didn't see any bad. Also... It's not a job for the meek. I had to pull one of the 90-degree pcbs to cap it. It was an absolute dog to desolder, and would be super easy to pull the through hole if your not careful. I wouldn't bother with it unless the problem persists.

I don't see a trinitron tube working any differently than any normal tube. They all have 3 seperate guns (red, green, and blue) to generate the picture. I think it was their shadow mask that made them different/better.
