14-yr-old Hp printer cartridge

I own a 14-yr-old Macintosh Centris 610, and with it a 14-yr-old Hewlett Packard DeskWriter, the first printer type in the Hp series. I recently started up my Centris and connected the printer to it. I wasn't sure what to do at first, because the list of printers didn't match mine. So I ended up clicking ImageWriter, then typing something on Word, and clicking Print. And although the DeskWriter has no cartridge inside, it made a sudden noise and made as if to print. Obviously, it must've realized it lacked a cartridge, because it stopped after it had positioned the paper. This is normal behavior, I hope?

Anyway, that's beside my point. I was looking online for the cartridge that my printer could use, and I got 2 choices: #25 (color ink) and #26 (black ink). I only need 26, seeing as I'll only be printing in black. But just in case someone here owns a similar printer, is this the right cartridge to go with? Where is a good place to get one cheaply? (The Hp website puts it at $30, and I don't want to spend that much).

Thanks,

For a printer that old, you might want to consider store brand. I've had good luck with Staples cartridges on a Color StyleWriter.

I think 26 is the right one, I remember getting it for a DeskJet Plus I used to have. Any model number on that DeskWriter?

I now have a Centris 610 cased Quadra 610 as my mother board died and was replaced with the quadra board. Bought it new I believe in 1993 with a HP Deskwriter no model number it uses HP 5126A black ink cartridges and is still going strong. Last ink cartridge I bought was November 07. If you have the same model that cartridge should work.

I got the cartridge a while ago, and it works all right. But whenever I tried to print a document, I either got a system error or the HP printed a page of solid black ink. I'll try and get ahold of the printer software to reinstall it...

This post was ages ago. So imagine my surprise when I saw it back at the top of the threads.

Sorry, I should have said; I got the right cartridge ages ago. Not only that, but I installed the software on both the Macintosh SE and the Centris 610.

By the way, I just installed it on the Centris today; I just got it a replacement floppy drive! :)
