I was just looking at the datasheet for the km4132g512q and it needs 10 address lines (notice that pin 29 is now a10 rather than a9) whereas the Rage Pro only has 9 address lines according to the Gossamer and Columbus schematics.
Piggy-backing chips (not easy with QFP - I tried) is the only way...
Not exactly. Have you seen PCBs with castellated vias, like the Raspberry Pi pico? I'd make a couple to fit the footprints of the two mask rom chips, and solder them in place after removing the stock rom chips. Each of these new pcbs would bring the connections to a pin header in the middle, and...
I have a concept in mind for a mezzanine adapter board that could take something like a pair of MX29F1615 chips. I’ll knock out a prototype if you’re interested in working together on this.
How much trial and error would it likely need? Because if you wanted to try some of those edits I could burn them to a couple of spare chips over here to test them out.
We should use the 550c ROM as a base, of course, since it will work in all 500 series models.
I don't think it's anything cynical. To clarify, you can run a 550c CPU in an earlier model, but not the other way round. The 550c/30F2 ROM has a special driver to run the larger display.
I tried it, just for you. It sees it as a 520/540.
Digging into this a bit further, I wonder if a 550c...
I keep a mid-2012 15" MacBook Pro (non-retina) around, it's made up with bits from a few different machines. The hi-res antiglare screen is notably taken from my old early 2011 machine that I had from new. My aunt still has the bottom half of that machine, hope to get it back one day!
I'm...
I upgraded a 117/133 board to a 166 board by flashing and soldering in a couple of 29F1610 chips. Pin 1 on both chips needs to be bridged to the adjacent pad with a blob of solder.
It's a super easy mod.
Incidentally those unused pads next to pin 1 and 44 provide +5V and +8V respectively, I...
I just wanted to show how I've upgraded the ROMs on a regular PowerBook 520 CPU card with a couple of 29F1610 chips, programmed with the 550c ROM.
Now, why would you want to do this? Well, you might have acquired a 550c that's been upgraded with a PPC chip, but wish to revert it to its stock...
Yeah, pretty annoying especially considering there’s only one monitor that can actually use that connector - not a monitor that’s very common, or very capable!
