Testing 333MHz IBM 604ev 288in PGA module with G3 carrier for a PCI Mac

Thanks! Now I have a reason to be optimistic. I will post my results when I get around to playing with them.

Testing 333MHz IBM 604ev 288in PGA module with G3 carrier for a PCI Mac

@stynx I recently found a decent deal on a pair of the same IBM dual CPU cards with 350MHz 604ev chips, so I bought them to play around with: Do you remember whether the CPUs you got from these cards were version 10,1 or 9,31? I hope mine are 9,31 so I can use them on Kansas CPU cards with a...

What components are required for power mac G4 to boot

Pop open the door and take a picture, lots of experienced people here will be able to tell you what if anything is missing.

    A journal of two SE/30s

The aluminum polymer caps recommended by finkmac above are nice because they are sized correctly for the pads on the logic board. No risk of shorting nearby traces due to solder mask damage like there is with tantalums.

Weird Power Issue Power Mac G4 MDD

Early ADC G4s supplied 28V, but the later ones (like Quicksilver and MDD) were 25V.

Isopropyl alcohol is not a great solvent for the corrosion on these boards, and soaking it overnight would just be a waste of time. My method is to remove all the SMT electrolytic capacitors first, scrape any visible green corrosion from chip legs with a dental pick, then submerge the board in...

    Macintosh 68060 Redux

    8500 caps

@jmacz and @s_pupp, that makes sense. Did you measure the capacitance of any of the parts you removed? One thing I've observed and recently begun to understand is that old capacitors that have no visible signs of failure will sometimes read significantly higher capacitance on a simple LCR meter...

    8500 caps

    My experience matches Phipli's, although I think I had a leaky 6100 years ago, and that's a 1994 machine. My 5400, 7600, G3s and G4s are all fine.

    Radeon 9000 Pro AGP Flashing

@Unknown_K Would you be willing to check whether any of them have the hynix -33 RAM? I haven't been able to figure out the timing issue with mine, and it's still bugging me. I think I have backups of all the ROMs from The Mac Elite, but if anyone else wants to try archiving it, the more the...

Radeon X800XL in PowerMac G4 Sawtooth AGP

I'm not sure whether the X800XL could be flashed. As far as I know, the only official Mac AGP X800/X850 cards are native AGP (R420 core). The X800XL uses a different core (R430) without AGP support, with a PCIe-to-AGP bridge chip. I've been buying and flashing AGP video cards for G4s for a...

    Repairing graphics cards

Does the dual-link DVI port work with a lower-resolution monitor in single-link mode? Unfortunately my Mac collection stops at G4, and I don't have any large monitors at home, so I don't have any experience with dual-link DVI beyond reading about people having problems with it. Seems to be...

Mac SE retrace lines, faint normal image

Great info, thank you @zigzagjoe. This one's not in The Dead Mac Scrolls. I repaired an SE/30 neck board that suffered the same fate as @SpocksBeer, and the system displayed exactly this failure mode. New 2N3904 at Q1 and it's as good as new. I only wish I'd found this thread sooner, before I'd...

PCI ethernet card for Mac OS 7-9? (or Token Ring)

RTL8139 is 10/100; what about it is demanding? They are still widely available for $20 or less. RTL8169 also works and is gigabit, but you won't get gigabit speeds in classic Mac OS. Anything with a DEC 21140 controller will also work, as that's what Apple used on their branded 10/100 PCI cards.

    Repairing graphics cards

No output and no apparent damage is the most difficult starting point for a repair, I think. My experience in those cases is that the GPU is usually dead, but I would start with the basics: does it have the correct voltages and clocks? The positive sides of capacitors are good places to check...

    You know, somebody should........

This is a false assumption. Apple and their suppliers used several different models of cache SRAM, some of which, including the Samsung part number above, are compatible with both 3.3V and 2.5V I/O. However, all the ZIF boards run the cache chips' core and I/O supplies, VDD and VDDQ, at 3.3V.
