Gaming on a Kitted Out G5 Dual 1.8GHz Power Mac

I like your table idea! You must have an interesting life to find bits of supersonic fighter jets falling out of the sky onto your sofa. A question: On the benchmarks, is there a difference in CPU scores running from the SSD versus a spinner? E.g., how does your machine compare with standard...

Gaming on a Kitted Out G5 Dual 1.8GHz Power Mac

Thank you for this. It is nice to see the G5 (and one of the humbler versions of it at that) get some love on here. I like mine. What I want to know, though, is what machine you are cooling with that fan on the sofa!

    Daystar PowerCache Quadra

I looked for one of these to no avail on eBay for years several years back, so I’d love to know what I am missing. Keep the benchmarks coming!

    non-liquidcool G5 tower's and their fans?

Where you have an air-cooled G5 with working logic board, etc, fan problems can mainly be resolved by replacing heatsink compound and (ideally) subsequent recalibration of the fans by means of the available service utility. My dual 2.3 is whisper quiet even under load.

    non-liquidcool G5 tower's and their fans?

Why would you do that, given how well the stock fans perform?

RasterOps 8/24 XLi NuBus video card too slow

I think the RasterOps card did well on Photoshop filters and the like, which is what mattered in segments of the graphics industry — this being the primary market for all of these very expensive graphics cards back in the day. I don’t know that anyone was especially interested in frame rates...

Apple Portrait Display & Macintosh SE

I believe that Radius and Lapis both made SE video cards capable of driving up to a two page display, so some digging in those veins may be useful. However, the trouble with these cards (as often for the SE/30 too) is that the connector may be proprietary, or even something as unfamiliar to our...

    Powerbook G3 Pismo seemingly dead?

Yo-yo power adapters in my experience are very prone to failure. The wires break at the flex points, especially at the adapter end, in where the sun don’t shine and the thing is nigh impossible to repair. I’d try another adapter or test the thing before resorting to further, possibly...

    Coolest 68k Powerbooks to own?

I personally think a PB180 with a working screen is a unique piece of vintage tech that is hard to beat. The screen is the thing; until you have seen one of those in full glory, you’ve not understood the appeal. It is simply magnificent. AND it is actually more legible outdoors in full sun...

Just got a Macintosh Classic ii

There was a 7.5.5 update on floppy that came on just a few floppy disks, maybe five or six as I recall. If that is what you have, then you will indeed need 7.5.3 or similar already installed to be able to use those floppies. 7.5.3 came on 20 or so floppy disks. Remember that it belongs to the...

Just got a Macintosh Classic ii

I should perhaps add that the later Launcher (a Control Panel) looks somewhat like At Ease, but I don’t think that would work with System 7. Never felt the need to try it that way. Mind you, I expect that the Launcher was just a GUI for the aliases feature first introduced with System 7. Maybe...

Just got a Macintosh Classic ii

At Ease is intended for children mainly, since it gives access to programs but makes it rather more difficult to access things like the System folder, thus making a machine somewhat tamper-proof. Have you looked at the option of placing Aliases in the Apple Menu? This would be, in my...

Just got a Macintosh Classic ii

I have a strong predisposition to running 7.1 on the Classic II, as it is stable and relatively simple. System 6 (there is a version that works) will make it fly, but 7.1 is still somewhat nimble. However, I also have a vague recollection that one of our old and most knowledgeable members from...

    Laserwriter toner refill

Years ago I refilled lots of LW cartridges, using eBay-supplied toner bottles. Generally speaking, a new-ish, working toner cartridge that is just low on powder can be refilled and re-used about one time without too much problem, so that, instead of, say 4000 pages you get 7-8000 from that...
