    Macintosh SE/30 and lines

Does the computer have a programmer's switch that could have gotten bumped during shipping? If so, try removing it. I don't know if it applies to the SE/30, but Dead Mac Scrolls associates this kind of problem with a jammed programmer's switch in some earlier macs. The other cause that Dead Mac...

What kind of SCSI configuration does the Mac expect?

I also have had much better luck with Lido than with the patched Disk Tools. SCSI Probe is also useful - sometimes it will let you know what the computer is able to detect even though it isn't mounting anything. If there is a termination problem you will likely get an error message in SCSI...

    Not a "Classic" Checkerboard Issue

I now have soldering tweezers and prefer to use them as removal with them is as quick or quicker than the twist method, but for what it's worth, my experimentation suggests that if you must use the twist method (proceed at your own risk), the best way is to twist gently and with small movements...

Very pretty! I should exercise my Fruit macs more often.

PowerTower Pro - Startup monitor lag

I have the same issue with a Wallstreet with maxed out RAM. Waiting almost a full minute for the screen to light up after the boot chime is disconcerting but it works.

    PowerBook 550c

Haha, congratulations? Glad I’m not alone in the overspending. My brain can never seem to register the simple fact that lots of small (and some bigger) purchases lead to nasty high totals at the end of the month.

First Compact Recap Success - Color Classic

I just saw this old thread. Congrats on a nice recap. What brand of solder paste did you use? Did you heat/flow it with a regular soldering iron, or something else (hot air, hot tweezers)? I’m about to do a whole bunch of recaps myself.

    PowerBook 550c

Nice haul! Oh shipping from Japan, cause of so many woes. Second the rec for DigiKey (or Mouser, but I only have experience with DK). All the supplies I got from Radio Shack back before every branch near me closed were cheap junk. Not bad to get started with, I guess, but I sure outgrew them...

    Cameront9's finds

Ooh, Flower Power, lucky. I know those hippie computers are objectively ridiculous but I still want one, and they are among the few colors I lack. (I also lack a Snow, Graphite and Sage, but mostly out of lack of interest - I just find them boring or ugly.) Someone keeps offering a Flower Power...

    Cameront9's finds

Nice! $50 is a very good price for a color iMac in decent condition, working or not. I think $125 is closer to being street price (not unrealistic ebay seller price). You can get them for less but you have to hunt, or get lucky. I was very lucky to get a batch of color iMacs from a school that...

How to tell if SE/30 has been recapped?

Congrats! Do you have a picture of your jumper fix? What gauge/type of wire did you use?

Sound loss on custom Performa 637

I am no expert and can only repeat what others on the board have told me, but find schematics (if possible - if not then just go with what your eye can see) and test any traces leading to or away from C7.  (Diode setting on the multimeter, listen for a beep if the trace is good - experts, did I...

    J1 connector (Plus analog board)

Pic stolen from internets (I'm lazy): https://forums.macrumors.com/attachments/mac-128k-analog-missing-hot-jpg.473450/ The J1 connector is the one right next to the "missing" HOT in this picture. I think it is the yoke connector that plugs into it.

    J1 connector (Plus analog board)

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement J1 connector (one of the white plug in connectors, with four pins)? Mine has the classic burned out pin 4 that Larry Pina describes as the result of a C1 failure. He says it has to be replaced once burned,  but I haven’t seen one in anyone’s DigiKey...

    Clamshell SE and Snowball 17”

Haha, I hear this! I am working on repairing my machines one by one, but those irresistable "deals" keep popping up on ebay and elsewhere... I am really hoping that the many hours invested this summer in honing my soldering skills will result in my being able to rehab quite a few machines in...

    IIsi saved!

A IIsi for $5? Am I understanding that conversion rate correctly? Sweet!! Everything @CC_333 said, yes. The IIsi is not super popular with collectors but I have a great fond spot for them. It looks like your machine came with the same IIsi/SE-30 Ethernet card that was originally in my main...

Encyclopedia software for older mac (system 6)?

Filevision was another very early app (database) that could combine images and searchable data entries, although again the scope would be minute compared to a true encyclopedia. User-created Filevision databases were in vogue for a while on user groups, as HyperCard stacks were later. ...

Encyclopedia software for older mac (system 6)?

Yes, encyclopedia software only became possible with CD-ROMs. (Pauses to savor the idea of an encyclopedia with images that could fit on floppy disks.) Hard drives were tiny in those days too - 20 MB was standard on an SE and my System 6 Classic came with a generous 40 MB.  CD-ROMs did exist in...
