    Tips for desoldering corroded chips

I'm almost positive I tried Snooper when working on the same machine that had the RTC issues, and it did not fail any tests. However, I'm not sure exactly which Snooper version I was using. APD's "Logic Board Components" test should finish quickly, unless the RTC test times out and spits out a...

    Tips for desoldering corroded chips

One word of caution about MacTest Pro, though this is purely anecdotal: It does not seem to test the RTC, including the 1hz timer. Apple Personal Diagnostics, despite its vague and unhelpful output messages, does test the RTC. If the clock is running slow, if you notice inconsistencies in cursor...

G3 AIO / Molar Mac Appreciation Thread

One of these was the second computer I ever saw, and the first Macintosh, so I have above-average nostalgia for them, too. Especially the way the display would dance around from degaussing, when waking one up.

    1ghz iMac G4 Fan replacement

If the physical connector/pin order is ever the issue, but you know the fan is electrically compatible, you can also use a very small, flat screwdriver to press down on the exposed, angled parts of crimped pins on the new fan's plug, then firmly (not with excessive force that'd rip anything, of...

I was doing it purely for challenge, yeah. I could have sworn some of the Mac R128 cards had 16M and the same "R128P" GPU, but the bus would probably be a showstopper. I ended up putting back the stock GeForce2 MX and fixing my cheap SiL3112 card instead, which turned out better. (It was the...

It's the Dell version of the 128 Ultra (Basically just an 02 suffix in the P/N instead of 01, but they use the same ROM) with 16 megs of VRAM. I tried using rev 110 and 136 Mac VBIOS, but can't find any more online. After getting the old ROM off (photo) I installed a socket for the new one, so...

Disappointingly, it seems like flashing a Dell-branded OEM Rage 128 Ultra with the PowerMac Rage 128 Pro VBIOS does not automagically work. I didn't expect it to, but it was at least worth finding out.

This in particular got me good.

    Bitcoin Mining on Mac Classic

I just looked at the commit history, specifically the "instrctions.docx" [sic] file that was later deleted. This is blatantly the work of an agent or LLM.

That's strange, I always thought those belonged with the network cables.

A/UX 3.x install on IIfx hangs

If you've got that much memory working with a IIci, then at this point I have almost zero doubt that my problem was the particular SIMMs I used. Only makes me more curious about the specifics of OP's IIfx.

A/UX 3.x install on IIfx hangs

Are you using the stock IIfx ROM and a reasonably small amount of RAM? I've gotten A/UX 3 to freeze while booting on a IIci before by either using a ROMinator SIMM or >32 megs of memory. Both would get it stuck for seemingly different reasons.

    Upgrading a IIcx...

Accelerated video and an Ethernet card would probably be the most accessible. I was personally able to get an E-Machines Futura SX and an Asante Ethernet card for very little, a few months ago. There are accelerators with adapters for the CPU socket (if present), and of course Radius Rocket...

Still works, thankfully. I was afraid I'd crush the poor PPC601 while working! The HS doesn't even get warm before than the fan can pull air away from it, and the CPU lacks the discoloration/delamination you sometimes see in 6100/7100 boards. Seems like that rotated cooler design was a big...

    Macintosh IIci Logicboard recreation

I could've sworn SE/30 logic board (and IIsi?) was six layers, and the IIci and IIcx's middle layers were the ground/power planes, with the logic conveniently on the visible sides.
