Working my way back to the hobby with a nice SE/30

It all started when my father took home an SE from work.
It was the coolest thing I had ever seen.
I learned how to read and write on the keyboard of that thing. Countless "HELLO MUM!" on some early version of MacWrite - or perhaps MS Word?
The SE got replace by an SE/30 after a couple of years, and that's when things really took off - that's when I decided I was going to be playing with this thing for the rest of my life.
33 years later, I'm still in IT.

One day I spotted an ad in the local version of Craigslist/eBay/whathaveyou:
A pretty decent looking SE/30 - complete with a carrying bag. Described as a "US Model" which was a bit odd.
And for the very reasonable price of ~56.50USD / 50EUR!
The site has other SEs and SE/30s, but they're all around the 170USD/150EUR mark.

Sent off a quick message saying I was interested, and only a few hours later after a quick drive I was talking to a nice American lady from Orange County now living in the southeast of Norway. She'd bought this one new, and CARRIED it to and from classed at UCLA!

Looking at the pretty much pristine state of this I'm inclined to believe her.

Got to investigate my loot today:

Carrier bag, with a plastic bag of additional goodies:

The bag contained some power cables, one Extended Keyboard, and TWO G5431 mice!

Mice seem to be of two different vintages:

3 Farallon PhoneNET dongles, complete with cabling, a 25DB to C36 cable, and a thingamy to hold your reference papers/books.

A smattering of power cables, 3 ADB cables, and for some reason a Powerbook power adapter:

Let me know if anyone wants this one. Looks almost untouched.

Now for the main attraction:

Looks pretty good!
A bit grimy, but looks like it just needs a clean:

It has a Kensington.. screen protector? Magnifier?

Surprise graphics card!

No obvious damage:

Motherboard looks GOOD!

Even the battery looks intact:

Maybe some slight cap leakage?

I don't see anything a good clean and a quick recap won't fix.

It's been upgraded with more RAM and a graphics card, but from how clean this is I'd say that's the only time it has been opened.

A last look in the bag revealed a Kensington swivel-stand:

All in all I'm quite happy with this conquest!
Already booked an appointment with my recapper, ordered some MeowToast battery holders.

The plan is to stick in a BlueSCSI or a SCSI2SD (depending on availability) and loading up some retro games.
There _might_ be some stuff tucked away at my parents' attic, so hopefully I'll add the old LC475, a Performa 630 and a PM6100 to the collection pretty soon.

Thank you all for an incredibly fun and knowledgable forum!

What a nice find!

Mice seem to be of two different vintages:

I think the differences among this family of mice have more to do with where they were manufactured rather than when, though someone else may correct me. Certainly all the ones that I have that say Made in Ireland on them are the same design as your Made in Ireland one, regardless of date, and my Malaysian one is the same design as your Malaysian one.

Recap all around, and that thing is awesome! Really, you found a beautiful machine. I never find any add-on cards in any that I get!

The Irish mouse looks to be of Logitech manufacture. Same design as the LT series G5431 mice. The Malaysian mouse is an A9M0331 that wasn't made in the US. Sometime during the production run, they decided to outsource production of the mice to various manufacturers and factories around the world. Whoever made the mouse from Malaysia received the original ADB mouse parts and tooling.

Anyway, congrats on the score.

Congratulations especially on that graphics card. That may very well be worth more than the SE/30, especially given what you paid for it.
It should fly once you put it an SCSI2SD. Don't go overboard on RAM though, unless it's cheap or unless you want a substantial RAM-disk. You'll rarely need more than 16MB RAM.
