why the slow forum

The general opinion in this topic seems to be that a professional host can cost as little as around $5 per month, which doesn't seem a lot and I don't suppose this favourable deal is much/any less than that. Anyway, to be honest a home server would offer more speed and reliability than this (and makes backing up very easy :p )
There's almost no way a home server with this many connection will be faster than this. Most people's home servers only have a couple of connections, if any, at once.
No ISP is going to let you hog their bandwith by hosting a site as popular as this one. They will either force you onto their business plan at a higher price or throttle your connection. Getting a real web host is the only answer.

I recommend ServerLogistics. I've used them for several years to host two domains and I can attest to the fact their down time is virtually non-existent. They are also a Mac hosting service too, which is nice. The owner is absolutely outstanding, very friendly, and I honestly think he never sleeps! No matter what time of day I email them, I get a reply within an hour! And no, they don't have a team of people on customer support lines either.

They even have server colocation (if you are willing to pay a bit more) which can easily host popular sites -- yes, even sites "as popular as this one" [:I] ]'>. (Speaking of which, I am quite curious to know what bandwidth this site uses per month.)

But of course, this service is probably not as cheap as what ~tl uses now, as he clearly stated he's getting his current service for next to nothing due to his friendship with the owner of that host.

Now, I must say that I've read through this entire thread and both sides are rather bad at fighting each other rather than mutually trying to solve the problems on this site. Yes, some people complain and feel no obligation to support this site financially, while others demand cash payments to the host of this site without stating that you will not be granted an guarantee of site up-time nor will you obtain a promise of moving to a new host. You will receive, however, a good feeling in your heart if you contribute, and that's probably good enough reason to support this site. With that said, I must admit that I myself haven't yet contributed, so perhaps it's time for a change. Getting back to my point though, I feel a bit on the side of "the complainers" insofar as these folks are simply passionate about this site. I too have a passion for it and hope it sticks around (with good backups and virtually no down time) for quite some time to come. If sending a little money can "guarantee" that, as it would on a Serverlogistics account, then I would be happy to do my part.

I run a few boards that are hosted by GoDaddy, and I'm happy as a clam. It's amazing how cheap hosting is these days.

Even if you roll your own and get a static IP (which I used to do), it's really not all that expensive. But the problem there is that buying redundant hardware, etc...can add up real quick. I find that getting a dedicated server from GoDaddy made the most sense.

I'm not saying GoDaddy is the best hosting service out there, but they've been really good to me.

I think the issue at heart is that it takes a lot of effort to run a site like this.

Frankly there are more important things in life then a forum on the Internet, so I don't expect everything to be perfect. I would feel bad if I thought that the admins were neglected their personal life to keep things at 100%.

I don't why I am even arguing about this. So the site is a little slow big deal. I'm certainly not in a hurry.

Well, not all of us are patient. I for one am rather impatient. Some are certainly more and others less. It's a varied bunch we have here. And while no site can be all things to all people, it is important we all work together to not only "recognize" that problems exist, but also work toward a mutually beneficial solution. That's the most important thing. And the fact is, most of us are "out of the mainstream" anyway in that we love old Macs. If everyone loved old Macs there wouldn't be any around to buy on EBAY! :b&w:

So being patient with "each other" is a critical point, just as much as it is with being patient during the time this site is offline.

the forum takes its spells, one minute its fast , then another seems like your on a 9600 baud or slower dialup modem. it does get annoying at times when you are trying to edit a post and its taking like 15 minutes for the page to respond. And no its not my connection having issues, cause i can browse to any other site and its fast as hell connecting to them and loading the page so i know its not my connection at fault. i am not complaining at the least about it, it just gets rather annoying when it use to be fast at responding and loading the pages and such.

I think the formula should be:

Contributors - people who have donated time / money to keep the site up

Everyone else

Contributors can bitch about slow speeds.

Everyone else, well maybe you should contribute.

I follow the formula. I don't contribute $$ therefore I can' complain about the speed.

It seems like whatever the issues were, they've been fixed. The board has been great for me for at least the last week or so.

We've been on a brand new server (albeit at the same hosting company) since just before Christmas... seems to be a lot better!
